Reverse lights...

(Aside from my own reverse light thread).

Something I've been coming across more and more lately from people, "Reverse light is to show you're reversing, not to light the way behind you".

Is it only me or is that utterly daft?

If we're talking about night time, surely to reverse then you need to see where you are going to be safe and not hit anything or anyone, make sense?

    What's everyone else think?

Personally, I think it's for both. Which is why I hate cars that hide the reverse light under the bumper like the older Ford Focuses and the Citroen C5 hatch.

    This too shall pass.

Eh,I guess it makes sense, but I've never needed a light behind me (more than the reverse light actually provides) in nearly 10 years of driving.
I guess people just don't reverse as fast as they drive forward?

Sure, I agree it's for both.

    Speed isn't an issue here.

Where I live, when it's dark, well, it's dark. That's it. You can't see. So if I need to reverse, I can't see without proper illumination.

I don't consider that safe, for me, for other road users, or for my car.

i have to agree, got an a6 recently and when reversing there is very little light given to see the way..down in the countryside this can be an issue. Old skoda octavia lit up whole area :D

Unfortunately a lot of car makers only fit one reversing light, and if it's on one side only it doesn't illuminate. Surely it should illuminate at night as otherwise it can be hard to reverse at night.

Reversing light must have been crossed with the flux capacitor.
