Which local radio presenters would you consider to be good, bad & just annoying?

KFM, Radio Kerry, East Coast Fm, Limericks Live 95, South East Radio, C103, KCLR 96fm are just a few local stations I can name off the top of my head.

Which presenters are good/bad/annoying according to you?
Or do you just listen to regional/national radio?

I'll kick it off KFM have a Liam Kett that I'm not a fan of (maybe it's the music I'm not a fan of?? ... what about you?)

Billy McCarthy WLR, he has been doing the morning magazine programme Deise AM for decades and he is still incapable of speaking more than half a sentence without tripping over himself or talking his way down a cul-de-sac.

Rubbish mike you wouldn't miss him for the world lol, I hate any of this entertainment news segment we have one on WLR cringeworthy .

    The Good
    Ray Foley on 98FM.
    Victor Barry on RED FM.
    Stevie G on RED FM.

    The Bad
Jimmy Reidy on C103: Monotonous voice, stumbles over his has words, poor diction in general. But the auld wans love him.
There's a presenter on 95FM who has a harsh English accent which annoys me, can't think of his name.

Those are the only ones that stand out really. The rest of local radio just kind of blends into one.

Most of the presenters on South East Radio are in bad need of some election lessons.

    Why?

Do they keep getting the names of the local TDs wrong ?

    The bad:

Galway Bay FM. All of them are either just plain poor or bored out of their minds or both.

    What about some electrocution lessons?

Cillian Whelan, sports presenter on KFM. Absolutely brutal!

Elocution and electrocution are different words.

    They said election.

Andrew Morrisey on Radio Kerry, great presenter. I think he should move to a bigger market like Cork . I feel he has a huge future ahead of him in Irish radio and needs to leave the small station. When I asked him what station he would like to work at (out of any UK/IE) he said "2fm". Watch this space.....

He clearly has no taste. Not a BBC Radio station or any of the big UK stations but 2FM. Has he listened to that sorry excuse for a national station? The mind boggles.

Well, he said that he would like to "turn around 2fm" ie. get them back on to solid ground with more listeners. Its his ambition

Ah, I see. I wish him luck but I reckon the incompetent idiots at 2FM will never see the light. If only the bosses could see that the 2FM ship needs to tack and start sailing in a different direction i.e. the younger demographic. It really is a disgrace that you've got RTE R1 and Newstalk to do their talk radio on news and current affairs, then you've got Today FM for a bit of music and the aforementioned aspects. The gaping hole is a youth-orientated, music-driven station. I think I'll save my rant for the 2FM thread.

Yep cool, it's hard to tell sarcasm through text I think you'll find. How am I to know you've got a vast vocabulary.

Ah, predictive text has caught me out. Sorry. I meant to say, elocution.

Spent the last few days listening to Barry Dunne on 98fm, hadn't listened before and it was brilliant the right amount of talk between music. Not too little and Not a lot.

Great presenter he is, but I feel pity for 98 and the situation that they're in at the moment...

Dwindling listener ship and lack of funds seems to be the main problem.

Barry dunne much like his counterpart on fm104 Andy preston is a drone, they both have decent voices, easy enough to listen to but even within the space of a tight link, even once per hour Id like to hear some personality / an observation / a personal insight / something to hook the listener in ? In the space of his 5 hour show this rarely happens, its dull its safe and its repetitive. The only difference between Barry Dunne and Andy preston is their respective stations music policies, 98 fm's has changed several times in recent years, Fm 104's hasnt, as a result 98fm has lost listeners, fm 104 hasnt.

Ive only started listening to the afternoon show recently on Radio Kerry and have to say its pretty good, nice mix of music on it and Morrisey is a good presenter.

Would be interested to hear what people think about presenters around the rest of the country? Highland, Ocean, Galway Bay, Lmfm, Northernsound, Shannonside, Midlands?

    Any thoughts on Clare FM?

Clare FM is a good station - serves the community - excellent news service - John Ryan is a sound chap - good choice of music -like Radio Kerry a good example of what a Local Radio Station should be. My favourite voices are John Ryan, Stephen at lunchtime and the night-time presenters. Interesting that Mick Mac the legendary DJ does his a Friday night gig on Clare FM - a good voice too with a variend selection of music.

Listened into midlands last week, afternoon guy sounds like a clone of Tony Fenton.

I'd agree with you there, Clare FM serves its market well. I'm glad the Breakfast show is now presented by Ciara Revins. The schedule had been male dominated (apart from Marian Egan deputising on Morning Focus and the trad shows in the evenings).

The Afternoon Show is based on the Talkabout formula from Radio Kerry. I don't hear it too often but its quite good anytime I've heard it.

To me, Mickey Mac sounds like he's going through the motions. It sounds pre-recorded a lot of the time. I'd much prefer Brian Flynn who does the Mon-Thurs nites.

There is a guy on Beat 102-103, Dave Cronin (think he's from Wexford) and he's got a better flow than a lot of guys on that station but he always sounds like he's goy sinusitus or something, very nasally and muffled. It's very off-putting.

John Cooke is an excellent current affairs presenter. Often wondered why Peter O'Connell, Clare Champion reporter, isn't heard on Clare Fm anymore? Used to do the Friday sports programme and found him very well informed

As local stations go, Clare Fm is pretty good compared to what I have heard in a lot of the country. Nice that they always play a bit of Thin Lizzy nearly every Saturday evening. One station I have a love hate relationship with is Newstalk. It's grand during the day with Moncrieff and Dunne and even Hook isn't too bad, but once the sun goes down you had the smarmy Off The Ball and the show with Marc Coleman, who in my opinion is the most unbearably misguided presenter on the airwaves.

Listened to this guy the last few days when in Killarney, good mix of music and nice persona. Seems to enjoy what he's doing and sounds positive.

Also managed to hear Stevie G from Red Fm too. Great DJ.

Not any presenter but the station as a whole.....Beat 102 in Waterford is brutal the songs played on it are dire. I never fully listen to it but its on all day in work and the songs on rotation are crap. It seems to be a radio station for 13yr olds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭gigtown

In general I think radio is in need of a major shake up. It's such a special intimate medium and the lines between decent content and marketing material have been really blurred of late. Too many DJ's on a local level basing their content about what competition that have in a given week. Very rarely these days do I listen to local radio and feel like someone is actually trying to talk to me. Or tell me something they actually have an emotion about.

Being from Kerry Radio Kerry is my local station and I'm sorry to be so negative but I'm not getting the posts about Andrew Morrissey ? He may very well know everything about Radio as someone above mentioned ? Having never met him I don't his level of expertise but as far as presenting he's a very average ' even below average music jock . Somebody said he wants to turn 2FM around ? Really ? I admire his ambition ' but the mind boggles .

Agree with most of the above ref Clare FM - usually only listen to it when on the way up to Mayo from Tipperary - certainly beats Galway Bay FM(shocking station in my opinion but excellent sports coverage) and most other regional stations....
