I know Im a bit early with this :), but I was just wondering when is the best time to spray rushes and with what. Also how do I deal with them in silage ground.

unless they are really thick I would cut the silage first then spray the regrowth after a few weeks with MCPA.

The rushes are at epidemic levels now. There's going to be a lot of spray used this year

They seem to thrive in wet ground.

I find spring time usually the best to get a kill on rushes.

For silage ground, i usually lick the rushes in March. That way they have died down before the first cut in June and you're not left with rushes through the bales of silage. I don't like to spray rushes on silage ground as it tends to stunt grass growth and it kills any other sprat and crowfoot that usually account for a bit of feeding in silage. Licking only kills the rushes that it touches.

I spray with MCPA and I use Roundup or an equivalent Glyphosate in the licker
