LCD or inverter

I have a Dell Vostro a860 laptop. It was still running ok but for a while the screen has been blacking out. For a while I was able to hold the screen a certain way and it would work. It increasingly flickered as it went on. Subsequently discovered if I started up on battery and then plugged in a minute later it would stay on. Then it was possible to get the screen to work by refreshing the screen.

Anyway, that's all background. To cut a long story short the screen now won't really work at all. If I refresh screen it will light for about 1 second and then goes dark again. If you shine a torch you can see that the screen is still there just not lit.

I can't really afford to replace the laptop or do a lot to repair it. I've seen on ebay you can get a replacement LCD for about 60 quid but you can get an LCD inverter for a tenner. I just wondered based on people's experience what the best solution might be.

sounds like the inverter for the backlight is gone . as you said you can see the image on the lcd but it is not backlit .... buy the inverter and search for a service manual online to help you with the repairs ...
