I don't know if this has been posted yet but wanted to put it out there.

HOMES and businesses without a television will still be hit with a new broadcasting licence fee under government plans.

The new levy is being considered in a bid to ensure people who view public service broadcasting online will not be able to avoid paying.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/new-broadcasting-licence-to-target-every-irish-household-even-those-without-a-tv-2993767.html

So even people like me? I do not consume RTE, in any way shape or form? I don't visit their website, I have a television that has never been connected to any TV service of any kind in the time that I have has it, it is used solely for gaming and netflix. I don't use the RTE player. I don't listen to their radio stations. I have no interest in consuming anything that RTE has to offer, so why should I have to pay for it?

Sugar, still haven't gotten into 2013 mode, are you sure it was scrapped?

Lads you have to pay it. Look at Ryan Tubridy, the man is fading away, he can't afford to eat FFS!

Under the same logic any internet based company could start sending out invoices to everyone saying that they have the ability to use their site.

If they want to prevent people viewing it for free then set up an account system.

Yes. It was a plan for the last budget and it was put off.

Any links would love to read, Pat Rabbite basically reiterated what he said in January in September last year.

I noticed how they were planning to call it a "media charge" - everything seems to be a "charge" now, it's a tax and we all know it.

And then never announced it in the budget.

Would essentially be household tax mark 2. How many homes don't have TV, radio or internet access?

Thankfully doesn't seem to have much support,

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

You know what I wouldn't mind a media charge of a fiver a month or so on internet connections if they did something like Canada and let people download what they wanted legally for personal and non profit use. That would be sound.

For goodness sake what more money do they need. Unless they worried about their 900 trillion debt stated tonight on prime time. Its still the tax payer paying for it not fair.

They robbing us as it is with their tax hikes and hikes on car fuel and their 23% vat.

I suppose its only fair, watching programmes online can't be touch and go I suppose.

Though the fee should be all one tv, radio and internet - online viewing if they were to introduce it when ever it be I hope it just a proposal and nothing else. Probably apply to online tv viewing but can't see it happening for radio doesn't make sense both come from the same line kind of but internet slightly different but it all waves/ satellite.
