only have 15 cows and 6 calved so far with 6 live calves.

that said, i had vet out at 5am this morning for one. vet said it was very close to Caesarian but actually took the calf fairly handy enough in the end.

head a bit swelled as should have prob moved a bit sooner but you know the way it is in the middle of the night -you will chance it on a bit hoping she will pop him out.

well if both cow and calf are ok that'll do. Nothing more soul destroying then having call the vet to do a section and still lose one or both. Happened to us a few years back, cow showing no signs of calving, handled her and reckoned it was a vet job, called him and while we were waiting for him (he was in the middle of another one that bank holiday night) cow decided to lie down and start pushing. Cow couldnt stand so had to section her lying down. Pulled a dead calf and the cow never stood again. Cleaned up after the vet and just walked out of the pen in home. Think i sat in the kitchen for about 3hrs just waiting for the sun to come up afterwards.

Decided to go out and milk the cows rather then go to bed in a bad mood and was greeted by a new born calf wobbling under its mother with the dawn sun shining on him. Felt an awful lot better for seeing him and just wanted to run up and throw my arms around him.

I'll be praying when I get home that all is still there. Cow was a bit wobbly too but I think she will be ok. Calf will prob have trouble sucking 'cos the tongue is swelled.

Thank God for the neighbour to check on things during the day - and the stomach tube.....:):)

Lads, apologies but just going off in a slight tangent for a minute!!

With the gestation lengths that a lot of continentals are carrying these days does anyone induce cows/heifers esp. those carrying bulls?
Do all heifers here at 287 days & they'll pop within 48 hrs. Find it a great job but am I in the minority???

    10 calved since 25th Dec. 22 to go .

it sounds a good idea but the problem i would see is that it would only really be safe to do so when using exclusively AI - very difficult to know exact dates of service when using a bull. Very easy to miss repeats, etc.

I have never induced a cow, nor do I know anything about it, but i would definitely consider it; we had a heifer a few weeks ago brought over 3 weeks and we had to get the vet out, it was touch and go for a caesarion but we got a bull calf out with a hard pull.

Is it just a simple injection and how much does it cost? Seems to good to be true surely there is a down side or everyone would be at it. It would be great to get a cow calving on the 9 months mark because when she carries 2/3/4 weeks it is very hard to get her back calving within 12 months

the main concern is that the calves lungs might not be developed fully if you induce them, i prefer to leave it to nature

also the problem is it screws up the cow as she wont clean properly.

17 calved out off 20, two sets of twins so 19 calves. Sold the free martin hiefer calf. 1 c section fot a ET calf. Induced 2 hiefers this year at 290 days both calved unassisted 24 hours later and cleaned no bother. It was my first year calving down at 24 months so i didnt want to leave them too long.

What breed or breeding is the et calf?

Also what did you inject to induce the heifers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,828 ✭✭✭yellow50HX

two red lim heifer calves so far this year, both out of cows with loads of milk, will be defo kept for replacements. One of them is the 3rd red heifer in a row from the same cow, she is a FR left over from when we were milking kept her to breed replacments and she hasnt let me down.

What about milk for the new born? For example, if you have a limousin, she could bring 300 days with her normally and it will only be on the 298th day that she will have her bag full of milk. If you induced her at 287 days then she could have nothing for the calf??

The et was a Simmental. Had 3 and the other 2 calved on their own so not too bad I suppose.
Don't know off hand what the stuff was. There was 2 injections one to bring the heifer on and one to make sure she opened.

Good stuff, are you happy enough with the quality of the calves, thinking of trying 2 or 3 charolais embryos myself.I would be buying them off another man.

Ah I find it hit and miss really. Very happy with these 3 calves but done it few times before and was less than impressed.

Calving 15 days 30% calved cows not due till 10th but now in full swing looks like next 3 wks will be very busy. 55% of heifers now calved only 3 assists so far 1 vet. Bull:heif 50:50. Calves taking longer each day, getting calves trained to feeders but so far so good
