hi all. JUST CHANGED SYSTEM FROM OPEN VENTED TO SEALED. AFTER FILLING THE SYSTEM I NOW NOTICE BEDROOM TRV IS LEAKING. IT IS LEAKING WHERE THE PIPE GOES INTO THE VALVE. SO ITS THE NUT UNDER THE VALVE. DO I HAVE TO DRAIN SYSTEM TO FIX THIS WITH PTF TAPE??? HAVE TRIED TIGHTENING BUT TO NO AVAIL. NOT LEAKING ALOT BUT STILL NEEDS FIXING. THANK YOU

To do it properly yes you should drain it. You could put a good leak sealer into the system instead, that'll sort it and probably any other weeps on other joints. I'd recommend oxypic

Often a slight tighten of the nut will stop the leak.

Closing off both valves into the rad would eliminate the need to drain the entire system I would of thought, should the need arise to open the nut.

How would turning off the valves allow you to open the nut?? The nut where it's leaking is before the valve

Did you install the system? If not then the installer should realise joints and taps will likely leak and it may be you have leaks that you cannot see .... yet!
The system should (must be ) pressure tested to ensure there are no leaks.
I cannot believe an installer of any repute would not do this.
If you installed the system then get a simple pressure tester and do it before any serious damage is done.

Because when you are at the edge of insanity, you can do just about anything!

NO I DID NOT DO MYSELF. HOW LONG BEFORE I WOULD REALIZE ANY OTHER WEEPS OR LEAKS?? THE GUY WHO DID THE JOB CHANGED THIS TRV FROM ONE SIDE OF THE RAD TO THE OTHER AT MY REQUEST. I JUST RECKON HE DIDN'T PTF THE NUT BEFORE PUTTING IT BACK ON.

If I see ptfe on any compression fitting I know that the system has been bodged.

You don't ptfe the nut, it's the olive that needs it. Generally, they do not need any, just some jointing compound round the olive.
2 choices, freeze kit on the pipe or drain down.

True, I am thinking of the nut onto the rad itself, or threads anyway. A few too many this evening:)

Im going to slightly disagree with this statement, your dead right on nearly all other fittings.

However depending on what trv was installed it gets a little tricker.

From working with most trvs i have said it before and will say it again danfoss make great trvs except for their nut and olive, the valves are obviously 15 mm and they wont include the differnt olive like most other brands do to properly go from 14.7mm irish pipe to their 15mm valve. It doesnt matter 99% of the time but there is the odd time where it needs an extra squeeze and maybe a small wrap of ptfe.

Myson seem to include the correct olive so have never posed any problems.

In this case the guy who did the work should of been 100% sure it was fine before walking away.

I would never fit a metric fitting to Irish copper & try make up the difference with ptfe. Just change the nut & olive!

I think DoneDL meant that if he sees ptfe on the thread of a compression fitting he knows cowboys were there

Ya you do change the olive , sorry should of said that there in the last post you dont try and make it up with ptfe that would be silly.

but then you have an olive designed for 14.7mm fitting going into a 15mm fitting and as i said 99% of the time no problems, however the odd time you need to give it an extra squeeze or a small wrap of PTFE.
After fitting a few hundered of the danfoss valves its one of the reasons i changed to myson. With danfoss selling so many there was no excuse for them not to provide an olive to do it 100% correct........ like myson do.

On the thread of the fitting with PTFE..... oh that would be madness and sort of pointless :D

I do like the Myson Petite TRV's but not mad about the LSV side. Had a couple of weep through the slot.
