I am currently restoring a 1987 Merceds Benz 500 SEC. I have two parts to find and ill have the car finished. However, it is proving very difficult find them. I was hoping someone on here could point me in the right direction or may know where i could get them.

    I need:

    * an exhaust system excluding the back box

    * Chrome strips for the side and back of the rear bumper

I can get them brand new but they are expensive and was hoping to pick up second hand parts if possible.

This guy here is selling SEC parts.

Plenty more of them online if you look. Try donedeal.ie , gumtree.ie etc . Also try ebay for spare parts or breakers.

The exhaust can also be made up by a specialist, this might be a lot cheaper than buying online.

Have tried a few breakers but have been told that alot of them have been crushed over time as the parts just where'nt moving for them.

I have also tried specialist for the exhaust. Its a simple enough job if they can take a mould of the old exhaust to make the new one, but parts of mine have just crumbled so this isnt an option. They can make a new one from a map of the exhaust i got from mercedes. This option isnt that far off the cost of a new one from mercedes.

Thanks for the done deal link.

Yeah there is absolutely no way Id put an original or used exhaust back on a 30year old car. That would be like putting "original" tyres on it to complete a perfect restore. OP, if you really want to do that go on some of the MB/Sec forums in the UK and ask, plenty of people remove stock resonators as they really mute the sound (was going to get rid of mine but I took a deposit on the car).

I was out with the guy from the DD link above, nice guy, plenty of parts, definitely be able to help (probably even with the exhaust bits). I got some chrome pieces off him too. Failing that, keep eye on DD and ebay.co.uk (at least 3 SEC parts shops on eBay in the UK alone).

Thanks matt. id think your right with regard to the exhuast system, but if i got a second hand one which was in good condition id considered it. The chances of getting a second hand one in the kind of condition you'd need it to be in would be slim.

Id def be hoping to at least get the chrome parts second hand. Mercedes qouted an arm and a leg for them new.

dont have any pic of it at the minute. will put some up when im fin if you like. Bought it about 7 years ago for £400stg and drove it home ( brakes where a bit dodgy at that stage) :-) Electric seat heaters, windows and sun roof where still all in working order. I have actually had to spend very little money on it to date. so it has spent the last 7 years gathering dust in the shed until i finally got around to cleaning it up at the end of 2012

For the chrome strips try asking Auto Benz in Nutts Corner. I haven't a number for them off hand I'm afraid!
