Today we will have publishedanother report cataloguing another appalling abuse by the Irish State of theweak and defenceless. Again the genuine citizens will hang their heads in shame– shame that due to our silence we almost condoning this abuse. Again we willhave to bear witness to the cringing hand wringing and mealy mouthed excuseschurned out by our leaders. It is vital that we understandthe psychology of the bully. We must understand that abusers and bullies willgo as far as they are allowed to go-they will prey and take advantage ofweakness to the absolute extent that circumstances allow. We need also tounderstand that abuse and bullying takes many forms – allowing someone else toabuse is abuse in itself – taking advantage of unfortunate circumstances and profitingfrom those circumstances to the detriment of others is abuse, doing so becauseyou have the power to do so, and doing so unknown to those who can step in and defendis abuse.
Our Minister for Social Protection, our socialist defender of the weak and vulnerable, not only presides over a departmentwho will take advantage of weakness and defencelessness but condones andauthorises this behaviour and allows it to continue in the full knowledge ofthe consequences of these actions.
The Minister condones andauthorises the cessation of household benefit on old age pensioners who havethe misfortune to become ill and hospitalised. Shecondones and allows this action regardless of the circumstances, regardless ofthe duration and regardless of the consequences. She refers complaints back tothe originators of the abuse – her department – her subordinates –her policy enforcers.
Check on the elderly in your carewho may have been hospitalised. Check and ensure their telephone accounts arenot unknowingly in arrears, ensure phone lines are not disconnected disablingalarm systems and nullifying insurance conditions. If you have a weak and sick elderlyperson who you care for check to see has their household benefit package beenstopped and never reinstated because the unfortunate did not know it wasstopped and did not know how to, or been too ill to have it reinstated. Rememberthis is the objective – cut it off from the first day of hospitalisation andhide behind the pathetic excuse that “all you have to do is get us a letterfrom the hospital confirming you have been discharged”, knowing well that many,if not the majority never will – simply because they can’t – the classiccondition of abuse.

Remember when you see ourMinister beating her chest and condemning the abuses of the past – the past isstill very much with us – bullying and abuse takes many forms.
