Ok, so after some whiskey recently the discussion started about car shapes and names, specifically Saloon, Hatchback and Estate, but also Kombi (German for estate/wagon)

Where do these names come from? Why for instance call a car a saloon?
The only one that makes some sort of sense is hatchback, since the back is a door.

Saloon and Sedan are a derivative of the Latin word for chair IIRC.

Estates used to be called Shooting brakes, a name recently used by Jaguar for their new estate.
The name comes from what they used to be used to do, carry around a party of shooters.
