Light came on yesterday. Can't really afford to do much about it to be honest. Was going to give it a basic service myself and disconnect the battery to turn the light off.

Is it worth the chance or do I really need to go to a garage?

Disconnecting the battery won't clear it I'm afraid, this can be only be done via a diagnostic tool or if the problem fixes itself. It could mean a tonne of different things, so check the usual things like oil, coolant etc, but you will really need to see what code the light is putting out to find the source of the problem.

At a guess its more than likely an O2 sensor fault common problem on them cars and are quiet expensive to fix..have it plugged in to check tho..

The yellow light is a check engine light and is an emissions base error, which can be caused by a multitude of things such as O2 sensors to spark plugs. As said earlier have a diagnostic scan done on the car to determine which error code is showing. Ignoring the problem will cost you more money through increased fuel usage or even engine damage,

Disconnecting battery (for at least 2-3 minutes) will clear an error. But more than likely it'll appear again. :P

There could be loads of reasons of EML to lit up, the easiest way to find out why is to go to a garage.

I'd say 20-30 euro, maybe less, maybe more. ;)
