Car Part Prices in Ireland

Why are car parts so ridiculously high here? I'm at a stage now where I buy all my car parts from the UK. The price difference is significant to say the least.

Just one example is a wheel bearing kit for my car. Rang a motor factors today and was quoted €140. Looked up Mick's Garage and it was roughly the same for the SNR (one of the better makes). Mister-auto.ie was €158. I was then advised on a UK forum to search here and it was only €80 with free delivery. I use parcel force to deliver to Eire for €3.50, so I'm saving €55 for the same part.

Last week I ordered a thermostat OEM part from the UK for €60 delivered. Online Irish retailers wanted more than this for an aftermarket name.

Flywheels/Clutch kits (original LUK/Sach) can be bought in from the UK, saving €100's, literally.

Parcel Motel is a godsend. They will deliver 'Ship to Uk only' items to the republic for €3.50. Huge thread on boards.

Pity as I'd prefer to support Irish, but I'm not willing to pay a 50% premium.

Find a good MF and use them all the time. I found this the cheapest way to go. Once they get to know you and realise your doing the work yourself there alot cheaper than micks garage and mister ato

The one I rang is supposed to be the cheapest around. Maybe I should be ringing around more, and asking for discounts.

The price difference is so big compared to the UK, I wonder would they come down this much in the end.

Try calling in and pay in cash rather than ringing. You'll get max price over the phone I'd imagine. Explain that you can get them online for 80 euro and see what they say.

They're usually about 2/3 the price of mister auto etc.

discs and pads cost me 100 euro in the MF. Exact same brand pads.

That looks a good site. Didn't know about that parcel thing. must investigate that.

Cheers. Will have to start ringing around a bit more, with the question "what's the best you can do"!

Find a good one fair enough but having to build a rep with them so you're not ripped off is a bit much. In fact, as patriotic as I am I'd deliberately send my yoyos to the Queen.

I've noticed its not just the price of new parts either, I often go to the breakers yard and am starting to find the prices there increasing and not just small increases either, had to get a side indicator lense for my fiances 02 yaris, was charged FIFTEEN EURO !!!!!! Would have got a new one if i'd have known i'd have been stung that much only I was running late for the re test.

We needed indicator/headlight levers at steering wheel on Peugeot .

Quoted €400 in Wexford ..........Googled a main dealer in the North and got the part delivered for €250

Not really building up a rep. They never ripped me off. Just been going in there for everything for the last three years or so. Started off just buying regular service stuff there and they were cheaper from the start than halfords, ebay etc. so kept going. I was shocked by the prices in halfords when I went in out of curiosity.

Went through a phase of getting more expensive stuff online like timing belts kits and the like. Found out after I was ripped off by mister auto by 45 euro for a TB and WP kit that was apparently on special offer. That put an end to that.

Motor factor wanted 140 (best price, cash) for a BOSE back and middle box for my clio. My Father has being going there for years and knows them by name.

Micks garage delivered them to my door for 99.35. Same BOSE boxes.

You don't really need the thread - it's huge anyway!

Just go to www.parcelmotel.com and sign up (provided they have a motel near you...).

Well did this today and the wheel bearing/hub got even more expensive. €180+VAT from another local motor factors.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

Back to the UK again for me.

Try the main dealer as well they can be cheaper with parts from time to time over the MF's.

I would if they existed. Saab that is.

But most of the car is an Opel Vectra anyway, so might be worth a shot calling an Opel dealer.

One of the big things about buying form a motor factor over going and getting off the web is the knowledge they guys in the Factors have and the back up they can give. Give you an example, VAG TDi clutch and DMF, how many know how to find the engine code to get the correct one? How many know about the engine codes on VAG, Opel, Ford etc? Do people know that on certain engine codes you can not mix SACHS and LUK? So you buy a clutch for your 1.9TDi VW, turns out you got the wrong one, Which you usually only find out when the car is stripped, how much to return it and get the right one? Will you get it right second time around? How much is a mechanic going to charge for doing the job twice? Say the part fails? Warranty is easy to sort with a shop down the road over a company over the web. Technical back up from manufactures is also readily available.

All the above cost money, but it can save you money in the long term.

Looking at getting this Damper pulley of the website you mentioned earlier. Seems to be the cheapest around. Free delivery to the GB mainland only, but delivery is the same to NI as ROI (17.50) so it will work out cheaper to get it sent to my house directly than it would use the parcel motel belfast address. How did you get around this?
