Press Pass

    Hi there,

I'm a journalism graduate who's been freelancing for the sports sections of some of the national papers for a few months.

I've covered club and schools rugby around Munster, bits of GAA and should be doing LOI once the season starts.

I'm just wondering though if people had any idea about getting a proper press pass to get into games, as I'm having to pay as much as a tenner a go to get in.

    Cheers

Apply to join the NUJ, you get the press card then once you send them off some passport pictures.

It's a bit more complicated than that, SD, there's a proposer and seconder needed to put in an application on your behalf plus the vote at the chapel you wish to join. Or has that all gone since I went through it?

With regard to press passes, if you are reporting on the one team every week or two then write and ask the club for a season pass. If not, get a letter signed by your editor saying you are reporting for that particular media outlet and present that at the stiles.

Thirdly, cosy up to the club press officers! Do this every time you go to a match, seek them out and ask a few relevant questions each time and they'll soon remember you.
