query on personal probate

    Hello ,
I am applying for probate personally . I filled in the forms PA2 and CA24 ( duplicate ) and
took them along with Death Certificate and 3 copies of the will to my district probate office .
This conforms with the Application Checklist of PA2 . I was told at the office that I should
have brought the original of the will and also that I must pay the probate fee upfront .
I wonder if I have been given wrong information . I understand it could take 6-8 months
and am worried they could misplace , lose the originl will .
    Thank you
    Tom

In any probate application, the original will is lodged in probate office

    Hello ,
    Thanks for reply .
I am at initial stage of application . I have not received an interview date .
I could have posted these documents but chose to go in person .
I would imagine if one was employing a solicitor he would not go in person and
neither would he trust An Post with the original will . There is no mention on the PA2
form of the fee either so how is someone supposed to know .
    Confused
    Tom

    Hi tluser,

Yes, Probate Office were correct- fees are paid up front and they do need the original Will and Death Cert.

It is highly unlikely that it will take 6-8 months. I think they meant to tell you 6-8 weeks as that is generally the estimated time provided everything is on order.

Yes, Solicitors generally trust An Post but they will use registered post and this is very reliable.

The Probate Office won't lose the originals of documents they realise how important these are! I would recommend that you keep a copy for your own records if you are worried though.

A list of the fees are available at http://www.courts.ie/courts.ie/library3.nsf/pagecurrent/BC7D8CAFF70E017C802575AF003E0ED1?opendocument&l=en.

Hope this clears things up for you!
