We had the same problem 18 months ago. Couldn't decide what to buy. We eventually bought a Dairymaster tank. We are very pleased with it. The tank has a display which tells you how many litres of milk you have. You can set the temperature and it is connected by computer to Dairymaster in Causeway in Kerry and they text us if there is any problem with the tank. If it is not cooling properly or if the electricity goes off and it is idle. It is really handy.

Bought a Dairymaster tank this year so far so good, build quailty is excellent and seems to be the best insulated tank on the market. The Daricool is a Fabdec tank made in the uk, by far the cheapest but have a read of some posts on the British Farming Fourm about them before making your decision. Mueller are also a nice tank. Ask plenty of farmers what their experiences of each make are because the salesman only gives you one side of the story. Best of luck.

you must have broadband in the yard so do you for it to connect to Causeway

You don't need broadband in the yard. You just need mobile phone coverage. Dairymaster put up a little antenna on the outside of the shed to get a better reception and it worked perfectly.

Often wondered how that worked. do you have to pay a monthly fee to a mobile company? I assume there is a sim card somewhere in the setup?

The coop I'm with ( centenary thurles) did a financing deal on tanks and cooling equipment. 4 yrs at 3 percent out of April-sept milk cheques. Last payment this September. A pretty painless way of paying for it. Maybe Glanbia do something like this??

Milk lorry showed up today out of the blue to collect 3milkings, and told us we are on 5milking collections from now on  Really going to be a squeeze to get 5milkings in the tank, will probably have to put some into the mobile tank (messy) for the next few wks till we are over the peak.

Bought a new muller last year 2k gal "hi preform" model 20k plus vat got the 40% grant leaving it costing me 12k there was a loan going through aib then at a extra low rate funded by the EIB think it was 1-2% above cost of funds has to be paid by march 2014 as it expires then. Looked at all the models and dari cool were a bit cheaper but not 5k but all the other reps were seriously down on them i forget there reasons something to do with the way they "flood released" the gas into the tank for cooling which at the time when explained to me seemed like not a great way of doing it.

only joking father has a dairycool in for the last 10 yrs no problems, mines in 2 no problems so far. when i was buying a tank each seller was knocking the other ones so i just went for what we had at home which was cheap and reliable. time will tell...

im only putting 4000 litres into my 12000 tank at the moment but with expansion and maybe 3-4 day collections i went for a bigger one. They cost very little extra for size.

On the subject of bulk tanks and extra space, what's the minimum practical amount of milk we can put in a tank? I recall someone saying that you need a certain % so the agitator/stirrer can function properly?
