    Shame.

Does the beam not come down in HD anyway so it would be no skin off their noses for us FTA people to receive it?

Aye, I suppose it may be got in other channels or with the old card trick on the EPG ;)

E4 HD is the same - only available to Sky HD customers. I understand that part of the HD subscription goes to Channel 4 - therefore, it's not in their best interests to make them FTA.

Why exactly is Channel 4 HD still not available on the epg yet? Surely can't be long now until it is.

Some programmes cannot be blocked on it. Channel 4 would need an Irish version of the channel that's encrypted. They do this with the Channel 4 found on the Irish EPG.

Why can't Channel 4 block some programmes on C4HD in the same way that ESPN block some Europa League games in ROI, or in the way that RTÉ block some programmes in NI?
Surely, it doesn't have to have a separate frequency for ROI?

Channel 4 HD is FTA. If you don't broadcast a programme to Ireland then you also don't show it in the UK.

The SD version of Channel 4 can block programmes for Irish viewers as the version on the Irish EPG is encrypted.

The examples you list are both encrypted channels meaning they can block certain programming for certain areas.

Ok, that makes sense. I thought it may have been linked to the Sky card.

The encryption is linked to the region in the Sky card, but if a channel is FTA then it can't be blocked.

You see, that doesn't work on the standard Sky HD box.

Film 4 HD is to launch soon too (I think only for Sky HD subscribers).

Although it's encrypted and so can't be viewed on a FTA receiver.

Well technically it is possible to view it.

Yes it can in either of two ways, using a valid Sky card in a linux box (against their terms and conditions) or card sharing(illegal). Neither can be discussed in detail here though.
