Can someone shed some light on this? A pal is looking at a €3K car, the dealer is saying they don't warranty anything under €5K. News to me, I thought dealers had to offer some form of warranty, otherwise why buy from them at all?

That would be my advice too, just interested to hear if this common practice, or even legal? The dealer in question is not a cowboy outfit either.

    This site is handy.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer_affairs/motoring/advice_on_buying_a_used_car_in_ireland.html

"In this situation you, as a consumer, are protected by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 as you are buying a car for your personal use from a person whose normal business it is to sell cars. As a consumer you have the same rights if you buy an item second hand as if it is new. In this case if you find a fault with the car after you have bought it the dealer is the person who must set matters right."

You still have rights. However, if their service is crappy now before they even have your money I'd imagine it'd be worse when they've sold you the car. I'd do what mickdw said and steer clear.

It's quite common bought 2k car same way when buying they mademe sign that I got my mechanic to check it over thought think it effects ur consumer rights ask them is car sold as seen or serviced checked over by them get it checked over urself also if it seems gud car and price right buy it

Buying a €3k car from a dealer is a bad idea anyway. Advise your friend to buy privately and have the car looked at by a mechanic instead - it's cheaper, and safer.

The whole point in buying from a dealer is the warranty in my opinion.
Even if they don't give you warranty you do get extra protection as per link above.
For a cheap-ish car go private and have a mech check it as suggested.

I would have thought the minimum 3 month engine and gearbox warranty would be given seeing as you are not in the trade and you are buying from a garage.

But I agree with the above, best not buy from them if they are going to act the prick about it.

Honestly, if a dealer won't offer even a basic warranty they are as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Private sales arent always cheaper I bought a 10yr old Saab for 2k in 2011 no warranty I did history check and got checked over car has. Been grand if u buy a dog a three month warranty won't be much use so just get it check over I would. Not have got mine any. Cheaper privately

Presumably the dealer who sold it to you made a few quid on the deal, no?

Its worth bearing in mind that irrespective of what the dealer legally has to provide, there is not guarantee that it wont result in a drawn out legal battle to get them to fulful their legal obligations should there be a problem. I agree with the others; if the dealer is acting this way before the car is even bought then walk away now.

A Dealer might not buy in 2/3k cars for stk. but have taken it as trade in or have had it long time in stk and be happy to sell it on cheaply is the car avail elsewhere with warranty similar price ? I am fairly savvy when buying cars I knew I would be covered if car cut and shut stolen or finance owed u don't get that privately why do Plp think that they can get a car that's priced well and then expect a great warranty sure the dealer could add €500 to price and give warranty but would price be as appealing !!

At this point, before you've bought the car, you can walk away, if its the type of place that doesn't warranty a car despite making a profit on it and being legally obliged to - you can be sure they won't be much help if something goes wrong.

At this price, buying privately makes more sense.

Did u not read my post ? How do u know hes making profit ?? Not obliged to give warranty obliged to sell roadworthy car if this car is similar price to private sale price then why not get checked out ? Many Plp price their cars stupidly privately

You'd make the assumption that he's making a profit, maybe he's not. Either way no point in buying off someone who just bout the car and knows nothing at the cars past when you can buy off the actual owner.
I always say you can tell a lot from the car by the owner.

Not every car you sell you make a profit on, I know that one from experience. But you still offer a warranty regardless if you're any way professional.

Sometimes main dealers will pop an older car up on donedeal (as a trade sale) or the like because its costing them a little more than they can trade it for. If you know your apples then sometimes real value can be had here.

There's no compulsion on anybody to buy one of these cars, you can just walk away, but by and large they're advertised at a good bit less than they would be in a used car dealer where they'd come complete with a short warranty. You can't have your cake and eat it though. You can't expect to buy a car for 500-1000 quid less as a trade sale and then expect a warranty too. The other option is to go to a dealer who is offering a warranty and but you'll pay the extra for the small service and warranty.

I see both sides of the argument here. Simple answer is if you dont know much about cars and you dont like taking a chance then stay well away. On the other hand, if you fancy a bargain and you know your way around an engine bay then knock yourself out. All you're doing is cutting out the used car dealer before he gets to it.
