Hi all. I was driving home from town on saturday evening and found that my car was making a weird sound when i pressed on the accelerator. I can only describe the sound as almost the sound a car makes when its going in reverse. but it became more high pitched, the harder i accelerated. Bare in mind that the car drove absolutely fine.
A friend of mine mentioned that it might be the acceleration wire sticking (if that makes sense). Anybody have any theories as to what it might be?

If its a high pitched noise it could be the powersteering pump.

I have an 06 Focus and had to get mine changed about two years ago. similar situation.

What engine is it? Could be turbo whine if you have a turbo. Possible one of the air pipes is coming loose.

    Its a 1.4 zetec...petrol. no turbo :-)

    Same model as mine.

your best off getting it to a garage to get checked out as soon as possible before the part fails completely. It could cause further damage.

If it rises and falls with the accelerator being pressed, it's most likely the Alternator on the way out.

If it whines when you turn the wheel, then it's the power steering pump.

definitely rising and falling when the accelerator is pressed.

i'll get it to a mechanic ASAP.

    thanks.

Sounds like the Alternator is the most likely culprit so. Let the mechanic confirm it for you, but I'd point him in that direction. If he's any use he'll know if it's that pretty quickly anyway. :)

any rough idea of how much it'll cost to replace?

I had to get alternator reconditioned in my 2003 Focus end of last year was 180 in total.
