water softners

    need advice m thinking of getting a water softner lime is brutal m thinking of going with the salt but it is very expensive yearly up keep, and it run on the electic but there is a new thing out on the market combimate i no it doesn't remove lime completly but it is a lot cheaper and it is supposed to be good do any of ye know anything about it is it good??? tanks

    Would all depend on how hard your water actually is. The cost of running a water softener is not that expensive. Yes you got to buy bags of salt and the power usage is quite low.

    What you mentioned, doesn't soften water but reduces the amount of calcium in the water. The harder the water the less effective it is going to be. Also with the unit you have mentioned these would need topping up of the polyphosphate compound to ensure it continues to work.

    thanks ronaneire i was heading down the road of getting the salt one i just didn't was to pay €600 and if €250 did the job why pay but i didn't no anyone who had the combimate so think i stick with what is best and well used cheers..

    I've fitted a good few combimate over the last year. There easy to install and give no trouble. I've had nothing but trouble with salt softeners breaking down over the years. I was recently back at a house almost a year after I fitted one and their kettle was spotless so that's a good sign anyway. How hard is your water?

    Hi dtp79 the water here is very hard my taps, the water dispenser tray on fridge keeps getting destroyed with lime n its a new fridge only a year old, the shower keeps playing up on me i've lost count of the amount of kettles i've went through even family ave noticed how hard my water is towards where day live.. m just thinking of the cost. if water charges along with paying for salt every month nxt yr it's gona be expensive i just thought that i might hear of people having combimate n if it workd.. but the salt seems to be working with anyone i no so gonna stick with it.. tanks dtp79
