Like others here I am thinking of taking the plunge and joining a club this year. All of the above clubs are near where I am currently living.

I want a club that welcomes newbie. Also a club house that is welcomes people in to have some food and coffee after a round. I know that a lot of people just play their game and go home that's fine. But I have been in some club house where you are made feel the like an intruder by members by just going in for a drink.

I am a high handicapper so the enjoyment of the game rather then the prizes are what I go out on the course for. I do intend and want to work on my handicap so how easy is it to get on the time sheet at weekends.

I would like to hear from members of any of the above clubs and their view on them.

I have never been in a clubhouse where I felt like an intruder so I really don't know what you mean. I've always found people easy to talk to so maybe you have a perception that I haven't experienced. I doubt if many clubs actively "welcome" newbies.

I play at Skerries and to me all the staff and the members are friendly. Since I'm a long distance member, not many know me but I have never felt anything but welcome. Like all clubs, it can be very quiet during the week. The course is fairly decent and is usually in good condition (the wet weather has made it a bit damp underfoot as it's not the best draining course).

There is an informal "Goats, kids and Nannies" 9 hole competition on Friday aimed at people who don't play that regularly so newbies would be welcome.

I have never played Balbriggan or Rush so I cannot comment on them.

Balbriggan is a lovely parkland course.

Gets a bit wet. But, a great variation of holes. A tough course.
