    Hi all
    I have a Sony Bravia Kdl 40z4500
The manual says it has a digital tuner and there is a digital setup in the menu.
I plugged in an ariel and set it to scan but it returned nothing :-(
It was an indoor ariel, and I'm in Galway City.
    Am I missing something?

    Cheers

May not have the digital tuner required for Saorview.

Check out Saorview.ie to see if the TV is listed on the Approved TVs List.

If your aerial is working, you should at least pick up digital radio, or tv sound and no picture

The TV has the required digital tuner but the indoor aerial may not be good enough to pick up the Saorview signal.

Try the aerial near a window whilst also connected to the TV.

Cheers. Good to know that I have the capability. In fairness the ariel is crap, cheap argos one.

    Would an amplified one help?

Maybe/maybe not, all the amplifier does is boosts a weak received signal at the aerial to overcome any further losses along the cable to the TV but won't improve an inadequate Saorview signal where the indoor aerial is located. External aerial is always recommended.

This from RTÉNL regarding indoor aerials
Can I Use An Indoor Portable Aerial, Rabbits Ears?

RTÉNL does not recommend the use of indoor portable aerials. They are too susceptible to localised physical and electrical interference. Terrestrial transmission of television, analogue and digital, is designed and built around rooftop reception.

It will be possible for over 50% of the population to receive SAORVIEW with an indoor portable aerial. However on a house to house basis there are many factors than impact on the effectiveness of a portable aerial. For example the orientation of your house, the location of the television in the house, the construction materials, the insulation materials, the proximity to neighbouring houses, walls and obstructions will all impact reception.

An outdoor aerial, positioned as high as possible, pointing towards the appropriate transmission site, with no local obstructions is recommended and will give the best results.
