My hubbie, my 5 month old baby and I are hoping to go to Portugal for a week in may. We have never been to Portugal before so we are looking for suggestions for self catering apartments near a beach in a nice area. Any suggestions??

Hotel Da Rocha is lovely - stayed there last Oct, so close to the beach.

I assume Hotel de Rocha is in Praia de Rocha?

That wouldn't be my first choice for a holiday to Portugal with a young baby. Somewhere in Alvor would be much nicer IMO. Lovely town with loads of restaurants, pubs and a lovely beach. Slide and Splash is about 15 mins away.

I've been to Portugal the last 5 years and I always make the trip to Avor for a night or two in Vagabonds (amazing restaurant!). I'd go to Praia de Rocha for a night out drinking though.

Vilamoura is also a really lovely place, closer to the airport too (about 20 mins from Faro IIRC). There's a marina there with all sorts of Yacht's parked up. Most of the restaurants and bars are along the marina. Would be more expensive to go though I'd imagine a its a fairly swanky area.

I can't personally recommend Hotels though as I stay at a family members place.

Lagos is a really nice family friendly area with nice restaurants and no loud mouth nightclub/pubs!
