Hi everybody I was just wondering i just moved into an apartment and I got a toshiba freeview and saorview tv and the only connection that's in the wall is a UPC white box. I've no interest in having UPC as I've got the channels so can I connect an aerial to the box or do I need to get someone out to get a regular connection our in. Any help would be great thanks :-)

UPC's service minimum charge is about 25 Euro per month. It seems as if the only option you have is a UPC connection.

In an ideal world the apartment block would be pre-wired for Saorview and Satellite, but it seems as if this has not been done in your apartment.

Have you checked with the management company/neightbours/wall outside if satellite dishes are allowed? If not and enforced, then this would also limit options.

You don't mention where you live, but it might be possible to use an indoor aerial to pick up a few stations (buy the cheapest indoor aerial, and make sure they allow you to bring it back if it does not work).

If you want free satellite channels you need a dish. There are hidden/transparent dishes available but they need to be on the south side of the building.

Have you asked the neighbours what they have done? Also look for dishes on the south side of the block.

Ask any questions you may have? and if possible say roughly where you are and answer some of the questions I have asked.

Hey thanks for the response. I'm living in cork city on a hill. There seems to be lots of different dishes on the side of the building. Ill email the landlord and see if they can sort it. Can I use the UPC connection as an aerial? Or will I have to try get someone in to get a new aerial point?

You might get the analogue channels from UPC through the connection there,or as said before get a cheap aerial to see if you can pick up saorview (your local €2 shop will have them).

Ask your neighbours if they have dishes up but remember it has to face south.

Thank you :-) how would that work with access to freeview as well would you know?

Freeview is the UK equivalent of Saorview & you can't get it where you are.I guess you mean Freesat/Free To Air.

You will need a dish & receiver but as I said it'll require a line of sight towards the South.

Make sure you are allowed put up a dish but if you have a balcony it's easy enough to hide one on it.

Have a look on http://www.isaa.tv/ for a reputable local installer if you need professional advice or an installation.

Ok thanks very much :-) ill try look into it tomorrow the whole thing is very confusing the building faces south anyway so that's something. I was told there shouldn't be a problem with freeview. Unfortunately I don't have a balcony but ill have a chat with the landlord and hopefully ill be able to get it sorted. Thanks v much for your help its very much needed and appreciated :-)

I was told there shouldn't be a problem with freeview.

Be careful of what names you use. Saorview is the Irish channels and broadcast in ROI. Freeview is the UK channels and broadcast from NI and Wales.

If in ROI it is unlikely you would get UK channels with an indoor aerial unless very close to the border with the north.

FreeSAT needs a dish, and has the UK channels, and can be picked up all over Ireland.
You probably would need a combination of Saorview and FreeSAT to get all basic ROI and UK channels.

You should be able to get a decent saorview signal from a small indoor antenna in cork city. I'm in the city also and despite not having a very clear line of sight I can get strong signals from both collins barracks and spur hill with an indoor antenna. You can hook a tv up to the UPC connection to get channels, but they are analogue only (so the picture will look crap) and only the 4 basic ones, so it really isn't work your while.

Wherever this belongs, its not satellite. Despite the title, the OP appears more interested in terrestrial than UPC so I'll move it there.

Oh ok thanks :-) ill try that. I was looking outside and there is sky dishes as well as my apartment being wired for UPC so I'd say the landlord might be flexible in terms of getting a dish for the freeview but that's great to know bout the saorview. Thanks again :-)
