Soft timing chain was a known issue with these afair.

Also, a mate has an 02 1.4 Almera which I work on from time to time, and the only weak spot I can see coming up is the front crossmember, which is apparently also a known weakness!

Were the gearboxes a bit soft in them?

Not on the old model with the 1.4 engine it's not.

If it's the old model with the 1.4 engine you should be safe enough. Mecanically these are fairly bullet proof, though some do have gearbox issues but you can listen out for that on the test drive, onother issue with high mileage examples is the wiper linkage/mechanism wears out on them.

Body wise rust is the main issue on these, the have very poor underbody protection so you should have a good look underneath, they also rust on the sills beneath the back doors where the sill joins the rear quarter panel.

If it's the new model 1.5 version you are looking at, id forget it tbh, They are a pale shadow of the car they replaced and suffer from stretched timming chains, cross member rot out and gearboxes are weak in them.

Check for rust on the sills, they rot like mad, CV joint, mines on the edge at 101000. Rot in the wiper jet lines.

Can't think of anything else myself, mine doesn't burn any oil and it still pulls well in every gear through out the rev range.
Not a lot to go wrong. :)

Oh, take a look for the airbag light, they can throw up a fault or just a dodgy connection. Can keep cheap to fix but can be a big job.

I have one of these with around 200000 miles on it and have found it very reliable mechanically. Apart from normal servicing, the only part I ever had to replace was the crank angle sensor, and I had to fix the heater blower fan once (it got stuck on full speed).

One thing I'd watch out for is rust on the body panels, door sills and chassis. What sort of money are they looking for?

TBH if you're just getting it for that I'd hang onto the Bandit. A 2 minute drive is an easy walk, or even get a bicycle and leave it in work.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Im on placement until christmas tho...ive had the bandit since last january..done alot of work to her but theres a bit to go that financialyy i cant rectify now...shes served me damn well and ill buy a bike as soon as its practical again..only 21 so plenty time!! The thing is in my work I do hospital visits, community project and home visits in a fairly wide catchment area so a car just makes sense now. Alot of the people i work with or the meetings id be in wouldnt take kindly to me sitting there with a race hump and knee sliders! At the moment my commute is 30 minutes...add another 20 to that if im in the hospital..while the bike gets me there on the m50 quicker than a car! With the windy weather and ice im payin twice as much on public transpot that i would on petrol..and i know thwe weather will subside and ive always been an allweather biker....but for the time being a car, unfortunately makes sense!

By christ will i miss the bike tho!!

Ive the bandit up for 1150, and the car is 1100...straight swap im more than happy with...and the guy sounds like hes happy to tip awa at a few fiddly bits on the bike so it seems a good match!!

Sorry meant to say 20 minutes apart earlier on! And thats on a motorway with a not very frequent bus route!

I agree with previous posters, check the front crossmember before purchase it went on my old almera but other than that had very little problems with it.

€1100 is a fairly hefty asking price for a 13 year old Almera.

For a 14 yr old bike on a straight swap im a happy camper with that!!

Not as much of an issue an the older models though they still do rust. rust on the sills and underbody is more common on the older model.
