Road legal quad?

I have a couple of questions about getting a road legal quad, would anyone here have gone down this road?(Pardon the pun).

Would the bike have to be purchased from new, or would second hand be ok?

How about road tax and insurance?

I read they're no longer classed in the same class as tractors for tax? FBD are the only ones I've ever heard of insuring them, even then not many.

Would it be OK to use a trailer with the same flotation type wheels behind it?

    Thank you.

Thanks Rancher. Who did you get insured from? And what's the story with tax? I'll make some calls in the morning, but it's good to know some bit before I do.

With FBD, don't think you can tax them now, at least our county council didn't want to do it but I wanted to make sure it was insured anyway, got no problem doing it on the chassis no. Will try harder to straighten it out if I get summonsed.....have it three years now

Here's the lawful answer to your question written in the indo in 2009.

The farm quad is set to become one of the most expensive means of farm transport if driven on public roads.

Gardai are clamping down on the "illegal" use of quads on public roads in compliance with a change in the law governing their use.

A little publicised change to the regulations, which came into law in late 2007, has meant the quad no longer qualifies as a "farm tractor" for road tax.

While the annual rate of road tax for an agricultural tractor is €88, the road tax for the quad, classified as an "all terrain vehicle" can be four times that. Depending on the size of the engine, rates vary from €288 up to a top premium of €333pa.

In the past decade, thousands of quad bikes have been bought by farmers all over the country.

It became the fastest growing mechanisation item on farms and became useful in getting around with speed and ease.

Owners in some regions of the country have already been warned by gardai that they must comply with the regulations for engine-powered vehicles if used on a public road.

Local authorities are set to gain thousands of euro as the net of enforcement is tightened on those who use the quad over short distances on public roads without road tax.

It is also necessary to have third-party insurance cover for their use in a public place.

However, FBD Insurance says they haven't had much demand for insurance cover for farm quads as most are used on-farm.

Don't know if thats still the law but thats what our co. council was trying to get me to do as well

We have my late uncles quad, he bought it new, it has a number plate but doesn't have a vehicle licensing cert as it was never taxed, in order to get one it will have t be taxed. It is insured for road use through FBD

I bought a road registered quad 2 months ago. like you it was never taxed.
I insured it through FBD. and then went to the tax office to tax/change ownership. They first needed a change of ownership form to transfer ownership to me, once that was done i was able to tax it.
According to the coco websites i should have been able to tax it agricultural but there was no option on the system to do that, so i taxed it privately for 180.
Then the tax book arrived in the post.
If you dont transfer ownership you will have to back tax it/ get the guards to sign an 'off the road form'.
Transfer ownership and you wont need the form.

after 2 weeks of having the quad i took it for a spin on the backroads and was pulled by the traffic core who were happy when they found it registered , insured and taxed.

They said that when they see something like that on the road they always stop them as a lot of them are uninsured.
Local guards might not stop you but the traffic core will. you could get done for having no tax /driving an unregistered vehicle on the road.

You would be foolish going on the road/field without a helmet as they can be dangerous. mine will do 90kph on the road.

As far as i know you cant register quads (hondas , Kawasaki), etc anymore with a few exceptions (chinese quads).
The last of the quads you could register were in late 08.

One problem with insuring a vehicle off a serial number or an english plate is the insurance company legally have to inform the revenue/customs that there is a vehicle insured off a serial number . they have to do this to get people to pay the vrt on imported vehicles. they could come after you for vrt money even though they wont allow you to register the quad.
    Its a grey area .

I would'nt mind getting the ownership transferred into my name but I don't ever plan on having it on the road, it has only been used once since last June & that was at Christmas, my 8 yr old was driving it (snail pace) up & down a field that we were fencing, (he had a helmet on as well). We'll use it for spraying our own land but that's about it so no point in taxing it.

My uncle used to do spraying for people & the main reason it was registered & insured (never taxed ) was that if he was out for a few drinks he'd leave the car in the village & get a lift/taxi home & the next day he'd put the trailer on the back of the quad, drive to the village, put the trailer onto the car & drive the quad up onto the trailer to bring it home.

Might try transferring the ownership again but the last time they told me I had to tax it to transfer the ownership as I only have an rf100 (I think) never got the vehicle licensing cert as it has to be taxed to get that.

They told me they could transfer the ownership with the 'transfer of ownership form' without a vehicle licensing cert/log book. it was in a limerick co council if that helps
