Went out to go for drive this morning and the wipers were busted (2010 octavia). Looked like it was about to rain so couldn't really go anywhere. Anyway we're away for weekend and over hour from home so rang breakdown see if they could do something.
When the guy came out first thing he did was swing up the wipers by hand which was easy enough to do so straight away said it was link that broke (I'm guessing between motor and wiper). So nothing could be done on the spot, ill have go into a garage in the morning before we head home to try get sorted.
Was thinking after he left if it was a link broken would you not still hear the motor going when you turn wipers on? Or what else could it be, i was hoping just fuse but he was sure it was link after moving them easily by hand.

Id assume youd still be able to hear the motor if just the link was broken.

Turn them on continuous wipe. Open the bonnet and see if you can hear anything?

Also try moving them across your windscreen with your hand see if they move when on and off? When the wipers are off they should be locked in place.

Could be linkeage, motor or maybe even just a relay

I think it's a common problem with Skoda's (see link at bottom).

I've an 2007 Octavia and I had this problem for the past few months. Initially my mechanic thought water was getting into the wiring so he double-taped them up and everything seemed to be ok for awhile. Eventually the problem reappeared but I could get them going again by manually (but gently) forcing them into moving. Once I got them going in the morning, they worked fine for the day. Then one day, they stopped completely :(

So I had to bite the bullet and bought a second-hand motor+linkage from Summerhill Spares in Coolock, Dublin for €90 (prompt service is not their speciality, lol) and my mechanic charged me ~€50 to put them in. So far so good (fingers crossed).

If you're mechanically-minded, I think this thread suggests the wiper motor gets bunged up and you can give it a clean up yourself to fix everything, instead of buying replacement parts?

Update, i went to try moving the wipers after starting the car and they wouldn't budge after earlier when i could move them easily which was strange. Anyway i decided I'd swap the fuse for the heated seats and the wipers are working now!! Bit annoyed now the breakdown guy was so sure that it was linkage, didnt even try fuses!!
Anyway thanks for responses, that prompted me to out and try fix it :-)
