My kids were in a gala last night. Both had problems with their googles leaking in water on the dive. :( I could write one pair off as being old and maybe perished a bit but the other pair were only a couple of weeks old. This happened every race! I tried them with or without a swim hat.

Just wondering how to be certain this doesn't happen again please.

    Kids are 11 and 9.

    Many thanks

    Steve

hey did you try them diving with these goggles out before the gala?
they might just not be a good fit for them, normally takes some trying out of different styles to get ones that fit well.

besides that, i'd normally tighten then a bit more than usual when going off the blocks. a decent pair with a good fit should not leak. there are low profile ones as well which should "catch" less of the water when diving in.

having said that melanie nocher's came off during one of her olympic races

Normally the ones that fit into your eye socket, work out pretty well, and just make sure that they are tight enough, sometimes you just get your goggles coming off, because of the way your head entered the water, practising your diving is key.

Make sure they are tight. Racing goggles should be a lot tighter than training goggles.

How are their dives. Is their head down and between their arms? If the head is anyway up, you will increase the risk of the goggles coming of or leaking during a dive.

Exactly! I believe that head position is important here. I used to think that the problem lay with the goggles whenever water would leak but from experience, I now see it to be the way in which one's head is facing when diving into the water or on turns. I always make sure that my head is facing in the direction which I want to go when doing this because I find that if it is in any another direction then my goggles tend to slide that way and consequently let in water. If on the dive, the goggles can only be forced by the water back towards the face then they are less likely to leak, I think.

thanks guys. one of the boys is an excellent diver and he rarely has a problem. the other is improving but has never had every dive go wrong. will have to try different pairs and watch head position from now on.

Re the goggles, a split head band will help balance the pressure on the head holding the goggles on snug in both the dive and the swim.

Otherwise all you can do is try them on in the shop to find for seal around the eyes and see if one pair is better than the other.

I had this problem, not so much when diving but just swimming. I found my nose bridge was narrow and when I bought goggles with a fixed nose bridge it was very difficult to keep the water out. I'm now using swiss goggles all the time and they are great (and much cheaper than the others). Good luck.
