I am planning to apply to a master at NUI Galway as mature student ( something about people reaching their 40s..) . I have worked over the last 14 years and I am looking for a change of career. I have been thinking about it for quite sometime now ( few years ) and while I think I am ready to make the jump ( says the man on my left showlder) , I am afraid that ( says the man on my right showlder)
1- I won't fit ( age difference) with the rest of the class
2- Not getting any financial suppport as I am leaving a secure job...

Anybody out there that was in my situation. Just want to know how they deal with the man in the right showlder ...
    Thank you

I'm studying for a diploma in NUIG at the moment and in the classes that I take, the age profile is anything from 21 - 65, so I wouldn't worry on that count. On the financial side, the college might be able to offer advice as to what you might be entitled to, you could also take a look here.

I did two masters degrees and in both classes the age profile was from 22 (just out of undergrad) right up to 50's I'd say. Everyone got on really well with one another and age didn't matter a bit.

On the financial side of things you will likely be entitled to tax back (check the course on the Revenue site). This can significantly reduce the overall cost of the course.

I'm doing a masters course in NUIG now and about 1/4 of the class (maybe even more) are mature students. The mature students generally group up amongst themselves for projects, but I think they're all great craic and the rest of of us 'young ones' chat to them a fair bit.

I wouldn't worry about the age difference, especially in a masters because, putting it bluntly, nobody cares! :)

go for it- if ever there's a good time to go back and do a masters, it's now!

There are many mature students at NUI Galway. As you would like to go for a Masters... If you are worried to leave your full time job you could ask if your hours could be reduced and you could choose a part time Masters programme.
