If I import a 04 car from the uk what way dose the nct work?? I take it \i will have to vrt it and get Irish plates/tax before I can book an nct? Its mot'ed in the uk untill may this year.

I take it I will only get one years test?

    From www.vrt.ie
For vehicles over 4 years old, an unexpired roadworthiness certificate confirming that an equivalent to the NCT test has been passed. Where this documentation is not available, the vehicle may be called for a roadworthiness test shortly after registration.

Dose that mean I dont have to nct it or what?

Well, nct website says something a bit different:

Will my car need its NCT if I have imported it from the U.K. or Northern Ireland where it already received an MOT?

The answer to this question is YES once it is of eligible age for the NCT in Ireland. Imported cars fall under two categories and this depends on when they are imported into Ireland, for more specific information on these categories please contact NCT Customer Services Department on 1890 200 670.

For further information on the importation of your vehicle please contact the Revenue Commissioner.

I was thinking it would be due a test straight away

It will be due for a test as soon as you register it here.
If it's an '04 car then the cert will be valid for 2 years.
The 1 year rule only applies to cars first registered more than 10 years ago.

But with it being a 04 even though it's not 10 year old it should have been tested last year and due to expire next year??

you will get two years from the date when it was first registered in england even though even numbered cars were being tested last year 02, 04 , 06 , 08

It was first registered in the uk in Feb 04 so i'll get a nct until Feb 15? Nice one. Are they still doing them Stupid long regs to let everyone know it's an import?

That means you need to have some form of unexpired test of roadworthiness (ie. MOT) on the car to get it VRT'd.

First thing you do is VRT it. Then you get get your plate numbers on the spot to get plates for it. Plates have to be on the car within 1 week of registration. It can take up to a week before the car appears on the database for the tax system (and subsequently NCT). Once it appears, you can tax/NCT the car.

MOT isn't worth the paper it's written on in ROI for ROI registered vehicles.

You'll get 2 years NCT from when you register it in Ireland, not when it was initially registered. (I just checked my own cert)

    Nice one.

    Cheers folks

If it does'nt have an MOT it needs to be checked for roadworthiness, in my case it involved me moving it back and forward on the transporter.

No you wouldn't, you would get till Feb 2014. It would have been due last year. It goes from the first registered date.

MOT isn't valid on Irish roads, so yes you'll need to book it for nct as soon as you've taxed it.

The NCT will due/valid from its date of registration in Ireland.
