its one thing i can never do right. usually only put it on in a night out. compared to when i am at the hair dresser who can do it very easily. i like that slightly spiked wet look but just cant get it 100%. i have about 20 different gels that are all crap. any advice on a good one. also anytime i put it on. i am literally just after washing my hair 10 minutes before but would have it bone dry but would this affect the gel?

The way I go about it is I wet my hair. Then use a towel to dry it slightly. It should still be somewhat wet. Then just apply the gel.

I've never tried it when it's bone dry. I can't imagine that it'd help in any way. Make sure to apply the gel all over your hair. You don't want to look like a clown with just one patch of gel on the top of your head.

As for the type of gel, there's a thread about it with a few different suggestions.

I always put gel in with bone dry hair and it comes out better for me than when it's damp. I use American crew fiber though, which is a matte gel, not a wet look one.

They say it's better to apply to damp hair, never wet, and especially if it's a wet look gel because when you apply it to wet hair it just won't work as there's too much moisture to hold it the way you like.

As far as putting it in, I just rub a bit onto my palms and run my hands through my hair and spike it up, then from the back I style it down to what I want. Only takes a few seconds to do.

If you're looking for good products I've used American crew pomade which gives a slight shine, good hold and doesn't harden which is similar to what you're looking for AFAIK. Very good product and well worth the expense.
