Passive houses and fresh veg

Many people extol the virtues of a passive house - but I had a call with a student from the Home Economics collage in Sligo this week looking for "what is a PH like"

Having covered all the good things she asked me - and what is not so good

    Well

Trying to keep fresh fruit, spuds and veg (and red wine) !! - the house is so warm than none of these fare very well and you need to make provision for how you will store going forward

This is something I've been thinking about lately. Is there any ideas on how to correctly store fruit and veg. Is there any way of incorporating a cold larder into a PH

A passive house is not a greenhouse, it will just be a good even temp like any other house, without the heating costs....

Yeah but most families don't have a fridge large enough to hold all their fruit and veg, allied to the fact that there are certain foods that don't mix well with refrigeration e.g bananas, I'm told, don't lend themselves to it, not that I've ever tried.

Thank you for bringing this back on track

The one place I found is under the MHRV unit - the cupboard in which this sits is noticably cooler and my spuds and other fresh fruit definatly last longer when in there

My only other thought would be to build a store outside the house but then you have frost, heat and rats to contend with

    A celler would work.

Or, if you had a garage, you could keep them out there. If you're good at planning ahead you could then bring in, say, 2 days supplies into the house at a time.

I keep my potatoes in the garage all the time. Just need to be careful if we get a repeat of the severe frosts of Dec 2010 - lost a lot of my home grown potatoes which were in the garage then.
