Quick question - I was reading in the Farmer's Journal this week (p.59), Justin McCarthy talks about a company exporting cattle to Libya. Does anyone know what is an O+/R grade bull?

ranking system in beef terms goes roughly like this E U R O P

E would be a real top animal
U would be a very good animal
R would be an average beast
    O would be a friesain
    P would be a holstein

thats then split into another category plus and minus

Theres something very basic to work off if selling. you wont get rich sending to libya but they might help tighten prices.

carcass quality is graded into 5 main grades E, U, R, O, and P in decending order of quality and those main grades are further split into three classes of +, = and - so you get E+, E= and E- U+, U= and U- so on and so forth E being a top quality carcass with a high proportion of high value cut and a P is generally a skinny old cow

    christ youse are quick

E would be virtually non existance in Ireland and if you have them You will not get paid for them.
U would be a very Super animal
R would be an Good beast
O would be a friesain or loads of other animals that are finished as bullocks (AA, HE, CH, LM etc etc)
P would be a holstein or a poorly finished animal however it may still be profitable

We'd usually get most ofour holstein bulls to grade O would be very diappointed if we ended up with a lot of P's. And I'm not confusing freisans and holsteins either we haven't used a fresian straw for over 20 years.

This all depends what weight you can carry them to. I have seen Fresians kill R= & R- however they have to be carried to over 800kgs Liveweight KO over 400kgs. These were September/October born calves so they had some holstein blood in them. However with the advent of killing bulls at less than 24 months and in some cases 16-18 months it is harder to get these animals to grade.

Most of the bulls going for export in North africa will be killed at about 550KGS so they will only grade 0+/R at that weight
