tyre pressure

I had a blow out today while pumping one of the tyres. The tyre (a grand prix 4000s) has a max pressure of 8.5 bar - 120 psi. The tube blew at 100psi.

When I bought a replacement schwalbe tube in the LBS I was surprised that there is no guidance shown on the tube of the maximum pressure.

Is maximum pressure dependent on the tube or tyre?

Dependent on the tyre - should be on the sidewall

Id guess either a cheap n nasty tube or spoke sticking up through rim or maybe bit of glass in tyre?

Was it the tube or the tyre that exploded?

Had a pumping explosion once and it was the tube. I reckon it was my own fault as I was having a hard time putting schwalbe marathon pluses on and I think I pinched the tube with the tyre lever when seating the tyre on. It blew at about 60 psi and was the first, and only, time that my ears rang for an hour!

I had a similar experience with Marathon Plus. I put on the tyre in the kitchen, inserted the tube, pumped it to 115 not realising that the tyre wasn't seated properly! I put on the kettle and turned around, and to my horror saw the tyre rising off the rim. I instinctively recoiled but the bang was absolutely incredible.

I never want to experience that again!

I thought 170psi in time trial tubs back in the day was scarey(like having cocncrete tyres!) ...review of this track pump suggests they go up to 225psi nowadays !
