Some cnut damaged my wifes car

Ok, So she was parked up in a shopping centre ans some cowardly weasel damaged my wifes car.
This isn't a case of them driving into it while reversing as I suspected when she rang me to tell me.
I told her report it to the security, and tell them we would like to recover the footage.
There are number of cameras and this happened right across a lane from one and another we were told is pointing in towards the direction of the car.

The damage is clearly done by kicking/pressing with a foot, it would be impossible for this to happen by accident. While it may be possible to pop out, it may wrinkle the paint and lead to more damage, either way its time wasted and potential cost to us for someone else fcuking ignorance.
I dont want to put the location or a description of the car, while not unique, Ive seen other examples in this colour, its reasonably distinctive. I had damage to my car years ago by someone clearly driving into it while it was parked and it was expensive to repair right, they drove off, but at least thats stupidity, this was intentional.

I requested they cross reference other cameras in case they saw the perp from another angle or get a closer look from another camera.

The thing is, while they agreed to do this, I am concerned they may just think its too much hassle and just tell us nothing was witnessed. How do we ensure that we get the footage stored and reviewed. I dont think they will actually be able to hand us the footage, but can we see it, to see if we can identify the perpetrator/s?

I dont really want to have to go the solicitor route to ensure they keep a record of the times events, as the cost would outweigh the damage and just be more cost for us. But at the same time, I want to try identify the person scum responsible.

If they say "nothing seen" can we have this confirmed by requesting in writing to the management/security to store footage and have it reviewed?

I think you may need to report this to the Gardai as they will be sure to get the CCTV.

Id say you will possibly struggle with them. In general these people dont want the hassle. Keep pressuring them is all Id say.

The shopping center probably wont want to release the CCTV footage, but if you go to the Gardai then they will get hold of the tapes.

Whatever the cause someone has either intentionally damaged your car or left the scene of an accident; either way its a matter to involve the Gardai in.

And do it soon; I can't see them keeping the tape and not recording over it for too long.

And keep us posted. This won't be the first w*nker in a carpark thread.

We already got onto the security, they said they will look into it and report to us tomorrow, I suggested going to the Gardai, but my wife wants to wait on the report from the security.
Im annoyed as there is no reason for it, not even poor driving, just pure ignorance. We likely wont be going the insurance route, but if we locate who did it (maybe its possible), we want them to pay to have it fixed.
I just dont want to give up on it.

I told her not to leave the car park until I got there as I wasn't far (and also until security looked at or that she reported it to security, they did look when she reported it). I thought it was going to be really bad damage, and having being caused by another vehicle.
while it isn't terrible, the panel was perfect before. The car isnt new but its in quite good condition (actually, Id say very good condition), so it is sickening.
The reason, being is there is a foot print where the dent is, that caused the dent, the dented panel is facing out towards the lane, so its not like a car door was opened and a child kicked out their foot, in fact the shoe size is probably a 9 or 10.

I dont really want to waste Gardai time but it will probably be necessary if we decide to get it fixed, I am suspicious if the car was recognised due to being distinctive, if its a random act of vandalism, Id nearly accept it, but if its targeted then I want it looked into. Thats why Im interested to know if we can see the footage, not get a copy, just if they see someone do it, that we can try identify them.

Go to the Gardai and report the incident so that it is on file at least; do that now cause the longer you leave it the harder it will be to get them to follow up on it.

AFAIK, under The Data Protection Act, the data controller of the security company couldn't legally supply you with images of a third party vandalising your vehicle.

However, they more or less have to comply with a request from AGS if it is pertinent to a Garda investigation.

So the posters above are right in advising you to report it to AGS.

I dont want to waste Gardai time,
Im concerned they will think a foot sized dent is of little importance

but I would be happier to try follow it up and see if the person can be identified (by the Gardai), maybe we can get them to pay for the damage, in that case will get it repaired. The car is in near perfect condition, it has a mark on the sill from previous to her ownership, but its low miles clean and good spec.

Bloody annoyed someone would do this.
Will wait to see what the security say tomorrow, Im suprised they said someone would call us tomorrow, sunday? if they have nothing for us, then I will go to the Gardai and just make the report.

We had an issue with tax discs going missing (stolen) before in her previous car at our address, I insisted she reported it, she didnt want to, so when I went to the Gardai, they wouldnt take the report off me as I was not the owner.

Isn't it great how the law works to protect scumbags.

I can see where you're coming from alright, but I suppose if I was coincidentally in a picture where something was going on that I had nothing to do with, I wouldnt want to be misidentified,
    however
I would still like to see any footage, if only eventually to see if I can identify anyone (I wasnt there, its just the car is distinct in colour and it makes me wonder) thats IF its recorded. I assume that would happen only under Gardai authorisation.

edit ( I cant see how at least the person that perpetrated this could be misidentified)
Be brilliant if they have been recorded and can be seen.

    BTW OP,if you end up getting it repaired youself, there's a guy that does Paintless Dent Removal based in the carpark at Dundrum that I've heard good things about;

    http://www.autodent.ie/

Sorry,I've assumed you are based in Dublin.:o

We are in Dublin, I was going to ask that about dent removal, the thing is, I think it is creased already.

The designed convex curved shape bulges out rearwards slightly, someone has put their foot in it literally at the peak of this curve, so Im not sure it is recoverable without damaging the paint.

When my own car was damaged years ago, by someone driving into it while it was parked, I couldn't look at it, so I got it fixed under my insurance as it was 3 panels and would cost me out of pocket too much, plus it would only have deteriorated as the paint and metal were scratched, that may have been a mistake as I am only released from that since last year (dont have to mention it anymore when getting ins).

The thing is, Im the one thats annoyed, my wife is less bothered? I'll probably cool down after a few days .

Its one thing if they drive into it by mistake, even if they drive off, (thats infuriating) but this was pure vandalism.

I'll stock up on plastic sheeting, I think I have an old desktop keyboard I can beat them to death with.

Without seen the damage I fear you may be over reacting, can't understand why you'd go on a forum complaining without shown the actual damage.

Im probably just mad (overracting) maybe I am, it just happened today, but annoyed as money is tight and we dont need it, who does I suppose.
I'll have to get over being sick at looking at that.
Id have thought anyone would be if they returned to find this on their car?
I dont want to show the picture until I see is there footage and can anything be done.
Maybe I am just ranting to let off steam.

Edit, its not even my car! while i wouldnt like it if it was, I wouldnt be as concerned as my own car has plenty of little dings from peoples shopping trolley escapades and inability to judge distances when parking :(

In the morning it might 't seem so bad. Suction cups work wonders

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,327 ✭✭✭Merch

well, we have been told none of the cameras saw/recorded anything!
Havent gone to the gardai yet as was waiting on the word from the shopping centre,
I think its unlikely the gardai will go and check if this is accurate or not.

cant see it being a sensible option to go the ins route, so
    start pricing repairs

Yeah, unfortunately you're on a hiding to nothing at this stage OP.Get one of the PDR guys to have a look at it- they'll tell you if they can fix it or not, and it shouldn't cost you to have them throw their eye on it.

I had a look at the auto dent web page.

They show a golf ball dent, this is more like a dent made by a football sized golf ball material

trying to get the image off my phone

its about 7 inches high, 4-5 wide and maybe 3/4-1+ deep
