G&G GR15 Raider - tight bore barrel good idea?

I bought a second hand Raider last week. While its in great nick, when I test fire it alongside my G&G M4, it's obvious the M4 has more power. Now I know my M4 has a 6.03 barrel and I've just googled the Raider and saw that it comes with a 6.08 barrel (I cleaned both barrels this morning and the M4 was definitely a tighter fit).

So the question is, will a barrel change in the Raider up it's power and accuracy? The previous owner said it was chronoing at 260fps while my M4 averages 300fps. I know there could be other issues that is affecting the Raider like worn piston, faulty seal etc but the barrel upgrade appears to be a good first step to upping the fps.

This is my first technical upgrade on any of my guns so be gentle with me if I've missed something obvious:o

a new TBB will improve your groupings and should increase your power a small bit. while your at it it might be an idea to also change the hop up rubber.

also when you have the gun apart you could spray a bit of silicone down through the air nozzle, connect up your battery and fire on full auto with the gun apart until there is no oil coming out the air nozzle.
reassymble and power should be up again.

Fitting any tighter bore barrel then the existing barrel of equal length will give a small increase in FPS
Typically going from 6.08 to 6.03 will give an increase of approx 10 FPS all other things being equal

The Raider is a very good AEG but like most AEGs will over a period of usage start to lose compression and therefore FPS as the O-ring on the piston head wears and dries out
You could spray a little silicone oil into the cylinder through the Air-nozzle and leave in an upright position for a few hours to see if it softens the piston O-ring and improves your FPS

When you first fire your Raider after doing this you will see an oil mist coming out the barrel with each shot but this should stop after 30-40 shots and you will then need to clean your barrel of the excess silicone oil which was sprayed into it during those shots
If you get a notable increase in FPS then you should really look into replacing the Piston O-ring as the silicone oil trick is really only a short term solution but great for finding out if the O-ring is good or not

How hard is it to replace the O ring? Does it entail serious disassembly of the aeg? I planned to start off with the barrel change as it looks straight forward. However if the O ring isn't too difficult, might be an idea to do it as well while the gun is apart.

You need to open up the gearbox to get at the piston assembly and if you have never opened a gearbox before then I would not recommend that you start with a Raider gearbox
A very nice and well thought out design but not the easiest to get into

If you remove the front body pin the upper receiver will slide forward but you need to hold the charging handle which stays with the lower receiver/gearbox as you slide the upper and lower receiver apart
From there you can simply pull the barrel and hop-up unit out of the upper receiver

Thanks. I'll leave the O ring then as I want to do one job at a time to build up my knowledge/confidence as the new barrel will be be my first foray into the technical side of this hobby.

I'll get the Raider chrono'd at Redbarn in the morning (I'll be using my M4 for gaming though as it easily out performs the Raider atm), fit the new barrel during next week and then get it chrono'd again to see what improvement the barrel has made. Then I'll take if from there.

One last query, the "gas tube" or so I think it's called (a silver pipe that runs on top of the inner barrel and visible inside the hand guard) is loose on the Raider with the result that the front part of the outer barrel and front triangle sight rock up and down slightly. Is this silver pipe broken or just not seated properly? It's not much of an issue at the moment but as I'll be taking the gun apart soon, will I be able to get at this pipe to reseat it?

when i put a TBB in my Raider it brought the fps up by about 50-55fps (also changed the hop up mind you) just be careful Dave :)
as for the fake gas tube, it could be the front sight post not seated properly. The Raider has stupid design for the outer barrel in that it's a two piece outer. The two halves could just not be on correctly. As for the gearbox itself, if you need a hand disassembling the gearbox give me a shout

I plan on getting a Madbull tbb 6.03 to put in the Raider. When you said you replaced the hop up, did you replace the rubber or the whole unit? If the former, how hard is it to replace the rubber and what would be a good replacement?

As for the gearbox, don't worry, that will be a job for you!:D

Bought the Ultimate hop up set (not the chamber though, the G&G plastic grey chambers are the best in my opinion, so easy to work on and strong too) for my Raider originally, since then I have the original G&G green back in with a modified H hop :) it's pretty simple. Like must things though it's easier once you know what you're doing. the hardest part is taken the hop up chamber apart in the right order and then not losing any parts, other than that, straight forward :)

No problem mate. I bought a 407mm x 6.03mm Madbull inner barrel to replace the stock 363 x 6.08 barrel in my Raider. I also bought a mock suppressor as the new barrel sticks out of the Raider's outer barrel and the suppressor will cover this. I'm waiting on the delivery of a chronograph machine from Airsoftpark so I can get a before and after reading on the gun to see what improvement the new barrel makes (if any!). After that, I'll look into other possible improvements like the hop up rubber, spring etc. One step at a time though!

I'll be annoyed if I can't at least match my M4's performance!

Maybe the newer model Raiders have a tbb but the second hand one I bought is definitely a 6.08. I can tell when I'm cleaning the barrels, as my M4's inner barrel (a 6.03 for sure) is a much tighter fit when swabbing with a cloth and cleaning rod than the Raider's which is definitely a looser fit.

just googled it again and it says the g&g come with a 6.04 barrel as standard couldn't find that last night think i get a vernier callipers out

how old is yours mines about 8 months old so i was told only have it a few weeks i know that the cleaning rods that come with them has very little room in it bought a cleaning head for a .22 air rifle for it works a charm threaded the end of the cleaning rod and fitted it to it
