    Hey,

At the moment I have 30mb broadband but as I understand it, I am receiving 50mb but my modem is limiting me to 30. Is there a piece of equipment I can buy that will allow me to utilize the full 50?

The reason I ask is UPC want €45 for a new modem and an additional €5 to replace my digibox with a HD one that can record. However, I don't wan't to get involved with another year long contract.

I have a decent router with wifi that's capable of handling the 50mb connection.

If I were to buy a Cisco EPC 3925 modem on adverts or something would I receive the 50mb or do I need to bite the bullet and deal with the new contract?

    Cheers,
    Lee.

In short no is the answer to both questions.

Don't buy a random router from anywhere UPC have to provision the modem and generally won't do it for residential accounts.

Pain in the ass! I was onto UPC a few days ago and one of their customer service reps told me my Netgear router was the reason I wasn't receiving 50mb. He said I could buy a new router from them or get one myself. So I bought a new router. Waste of €30 quid! Curse you UPC!

When you say they need to provision the modem what do you mean? Just curious if it's something to do with allowing the mac address of the modem on their end or something?

    Cheers!

ja it's to do with the mac address being authorized for their system.

Replacing a router randomly like that smells of utter BS from UPC CS.

At this time you are probably on 25Mb/s or perhaps 30Mb/s and the newer modems will work at the upgraded speeds
but you have to pay for the upgrade and then UPC will "fiddle" at their end to provision the new speed.

However the new modems are total rubbish especially for wifi so you will probably need the netgear anyway.

Smeg! I specifically said to the guy on the phone, "So just to clarify, I'm currently getting 50mbits down the line from you guys but my router is limiting me to 30". And he say's, "Yes".

    Son of a gun!

Anyways, cheers for the help. Muchos appreciated!

After some heavy back and forth over the phone I managed to get UPC to upgrade me to 100mb and give me the new modem for free. Only took about 50 minutes. Wahey!!

Hey Johnny-g, am in same boat - custcare promised lots but am still waiting on the 30 to 50mb free upgrade since last year, same bs about modems, but after lots of complaints & over n backs I was then promised a free modem, price reduction (!!!) & upgraded speed by last Oct.

After my most recent complaint early Jan (tv channels lost & signal crap), this was "fixed" but nothing about the free upgrade, although I did ask about it.

So my question is, what level of complaint did you have to go to in order to get the 100 mb upgrade? all I want is 50! lol

    Hey,

It was a fairly substantial effort kicking up murder on the phone in a civilized way for the guts of an hour. I had issues with over billing and contacts. UPC offered me a free upgrade at some point for being loyal customers but failed to inform me that I was getting involved in a new fresh contract for a digi box with very basic stations. I think the real clincher was the fact that they disconnected us from the main line outside the house in error a few months prior to the above fiasco. Had no tv/phone/internet for 3-4 days due to an error on their part. At the time I insisted over the phone that we had been disconnected because I could literally see the wire that led to the house had been disconnected and was told I wasn't qualified to make that call etc etc. Eventually someone came out and reconnected it.

I just kept getting back to that point when arguing with the loyalty department and also argued they had terminated any contract I had when they pulled the plug. (No idea if that's true or not but hey, the people on the other end of line most likely aren't law scholors either. :p

Sorry I can't be of more help, I forget alot of the details now. I would say however, hang in there, request to speak to the retention/loyalty department, if your not satisfied with what one person is telling you, request to speak to someone higher up.
