    canon 6d
    canon 17-40
    tamron 28-70 2.8
canon 70-200 2.8 non is version

landscape is my thing although do the odd wedding and portraits but mainly for friends or family. my main query is i was looking at the canon 16-35 2.8 but is double the price of 17-40 i rarely use 2.8 as i shoot mostly landscape as i said but the niggle is would i miss the 1mm

    any thoughts

I have the 17-40 on full frame, and it's pretty wide at 17mm.

If you never use ႒2.8 around the 16-35 / 17-40 range then I wouldn't pay double the money for it. The 17-40 is a stunning lens. I love mine (on a 5D).

Plus 17mm on FF is basically 10mm on a crop. If you thinking you might might the extra 1mm - just take an extra step backwards when composing.

I was looking at both the 16-35 and 17-40 in conns last week, think i'm going to go for the 17-40, love the 2.8 on my 70-200 but think the f4 is perfect for the wide angle.

How come your going for the 6d? with such good lenses would the 5d mkiii not appeal to you

first thing to look at is that you wont find a 70-200mm 2.8 non-IS NEW - its a discontinued lens which means if you have any issues Canon will more than likely not fix....if you do find it ...its probably old stock.

Not sure if the 17-40 has been discontinued ... I know the 17-35mm f2.8 was definitely discontinued shortly after the 16-35 mkI was introduced.

as regards the 6D v 5D mkIII ... both are very good cameras ...but with Canon - theres always a new camera in the pipeline !! (from what I understand nothing due out till October ... Canon usually do a March/October launch)

EDIT: Also the 70-200mm f2.8 non-IS is not fully weather sealed .... if you dont use 2.8 ...why not go for the cheaper f4 version ?

ha very good mad dog I should have been more specific, I don't use the 2.8 with regard to landscapes,I was thinking about the mark iii but ninety percent of my shots are landscape so the better af wouldn't really be a big deal and the 6d apparently has better noise control at higher iso for night shots

I thought that lens was to be discontinued sometime in 2013 but it is still available? Canon still list it on their website.

Canon stopped making it - maybe they didn't announce it so they could try sell off the old stock.

look at it this way - once its officially discontinued Canon will no longer be offering repair parts just something to note if ..like the OP... you are intent on purchasing soon.

    70-200 f2.8 nonIS
    70-200mm f2.8 IS mkI
    70-200mm f2.8 IS mkII

to be honest it makes sense that Canon would discontinue it once they released the 70-200mm f2.8 mkII

in the same way that the 24-70 f2.8 mkI should be discontinued soon enough. (if not already)

Out of curiousity had you considered a 5d mkii and if so why did you choose the 6d instead?

Asking because I'm trying to decide myself between 6d, 5d mkii and 5dmkiii. 5d mkii would leave me with much more €€€ for glass.

I have the 70-200 f2.8 non IS and it is still covered by CPN.
To the OP, don't waste your money on the 16-35 if you shoot landscapes. Get the 17-40 because you'll never use it wide open anyway and you won't miss the 1mm.
