What are the main issues to look out for on these estates? Are they reliable?

Timing chain issues, needs to be replaced at around 80k miles, it would appear. Electrics are a little iffy on Mercs of this age, seat occupancy sensors, and door lock actuators are 2 I have heard of. Make sure you check the gearbox out, put it through its paces and check to see if it goes through the gears correctly. I don't like the idea of sealed for life boxes. Also a little heavy on petrol and not very quick. Saying all that I would love to buy one.

Should I be worried about this taping?

I would be worried about any bodge job. If one was done so obviously what else was skimpped on with it comes to repairs.
