what sort of music do they like?

if they like folk, get an acoustic, if its blues, jazz funk etc get a squier strat with an amp.

second hand will give more guitar for the same outlay

    who's paying the teacher?

if YOU are, then YOU decide what to learn.

if your kid is a rocker and the teacher wants to teach him Michael row your boat ashore then he wont stick it two weeks.

    see my previous post!!
