Applying for third learner permit?

Hi, My wife's second provisional licence is soon to expire in the summer, for various reasons it is not going to be possible for her to sit the driving test before then.

I read somewhere that you don't have to do the mandatory 12 driving lessons to apply for the driving test if your first provisional licence was received before 2011, is this true?

I Also read that you can apply for another learner permit for a year if you have evidence of applying for a driving test. Does that mean my wife can let her driving licence expire and then at a later stage apply for a test and get another learner permit for a year?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

  • She wont have to do the 12 lessons but I think you only get the third permit after proving you have a test date or having a statement of failure.

Yes, this is true. If your wife had her first provisional license before April 2011, she does not have to do the 12 mandatory EDT lessons.

However, if she lets any of her provisional licenses expire for a period of 5 years or more, she will have to do the 12 lessons before she can sit the test to get her full license.

Hi I'm just wondering about my permit aswell, my second one has just expired I don't have to do the 12 lessons but here's my problem... I haven't been able to afford lessons I badly need to Learn to drive in the first place.. I can't drive at all..I have access to a car but I'm too nervous to just get in and go, which is why I want to get lessons when I can afford them. Surely they can't make me apply for a test if I haven't a clue?

Don't worry you have the next 5 years to apply for the next license so you've got lots of time yet. Save up for a couple of lessons if possible and the cost of doing a test.
When you've saved up book a test for 6 months away if you think it'll take that long to get ready. (or longer again - 12 months, 15 months or whatever the longest in the future they let you book for) Once you have booked the test you can use the confirmation letter you get to apply for a new driving license again. Take the driving lessons then and hopefully after them you'll be fit to take the test.

Hopefully in the next 5 years you'll be able to save up enough to do a couple of lessons and do the test. Perhaps just make a savings account for driving or something similar and add money to it every week until you can afford to get a couple of lessons together rather than spreading them out so much.

If all goes to all though after 5 years all you'd have to do is redo the theory test but in that case you would have to do the EDT training lessons.

Don't worry though - no one is going to make you do the test only yourself. Like I said, save up, book a test for a date way into the future and book a couple lessons before the test and hopefully you'll be good enough to pass the test.
