Heya, planning on going Inter-Railing in July, jut after the Leaving Cert, and just wanted to run the plans by you all, in case there's any really obvious things we missed, or suggestions to be made:
Leaving Ireland 9th July, flying up to Oslo, then heading down through Sweden into Denmark, on to German, then down to Poland, see Auschwitz, then a bit of Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, then into greece, get the ferry up to Italy, through Switzerland and France, into Belgium and the Netherlands, ferry across to UK, then back home.
We're getting the 22 day travel ticket by the way, and we haven't sorted out how long we'll spend in each place. Also, we wanna see some of the less well known places, rather than all the capitals, so any suggestions will be great. Planning to stay in hostels, and the odd overnight train.
At the moment, our list of things to bring is:
    • T-Shirts
    • Jeans
    • Shorts
    • Underwear
    • Socks
    • Quick-Dry towel
    • Toiletries
    • Runners
    • Camera
    • Jacket
    • Rain-Jacket
    • Crappy phone & Sim card x2
    • Spare wallet
    • Locks
    • Sun cream
    • Passport
    • Garda-age card
    • Adapters
    • iPod & Headphones
    • Debit/ATM card
Probably some other really obvious things I've forgotten, but if there's anything else we'll need, can you let me know?
Also, regarding aspirin and anti-baby devices, should we bring our own, or buy them abroad?
    Cheers

Photocopy of your passport ID page (although I'm not sure you're supposed to do this really).

More importantly, I think you need to do about half those countries to have a good trip. I did 2 inter-rails when I was your age and I think you need to spend about three nights in each place to not end up wrecked and then failing to enjoy the destinations. There will be other summers to do the other half.

Pack less so you can carry a lighter bag. Anything you need you can buy on the road.

    Have a nice holiday.

You guys are nuts. If you have one month, divide that itinerary by two. If you try to do more than 3 cities as week, you'll spend more time travelling than seeing anything. If I were you, I'd start in Hamburg, or Berlin, and fly home from Athens, or maybe Rome. Those trains through Romania and Bulgaria are super slow.

Also, that's a ridiculous bag. Whatever shoes you take, make damn sure their comfortable, and I wouldn't advise a bag larger than 50L. (Last time I did 3 weeks around Europe, it was with hand-luggage only - a 35L bag) Skip on the age card, and take a credit card if you can, much more useful. Even a prepaid one, buried in the bottom of your backpack. I wouldn't bother with locks either, just don't bring anything worth stealing. Nothing makes people curious like a locked bag.

Personally, I'd say a small medkit is invaluable. Paracetemol / Ibuprofen, a small box of plasters and compeed blister pads (you will get blisters), and some probiotics to put your stomach back on an even keel if you get the runs. Also, a sleeping bag liner is very good - you don't need to take a sleeping bag with you if you're staying in hostels, but some of them will charge you for sheets if you don't have one, and they're pretty comfy. Something like this: http://www.rei.com/product/627255/cocoon-cotton-bag-linertravel-sheet

    Enjoy!

I forgot to mention a penknife. Very handy for making sambos while on the train and opening bottles of beer and anything tinned.

I reckon it's worth bringing a small padlock. Some hostels have lockers, but you need your own lock. I would sooner ditch the rain jacket.

You will need a pen for filling in the details of your inter-rail tickets too.
