Amber Beer Recommendations

    Anyone got any recommendations for a good Amber beer? Am cooking beer braised pork knuckles on Saturday and the recipe calls for "a 500ml bottle of good amber or dark beer (not stout)."

    Ideally something that I can pick up in one of the major supermarkets or an off license like O'Briens.

    Clotworthy Dobbin in Tesco!
    Brewdog's 5am Saint would be another good one - available in O'Briens

    +1 for Clotworthy. Fuller's ESB, O'Hara's Red, even the O'Shea's Red that they sell in Aldi. Irish red ale always goes great with pork, I find.

    I wouldn't recommend 5AM Saint for cooking. I've heard that very hoppy beers can spoil a dish because the water evaporates off concentrating the bitterness.

    Badgers Organic Stinger is the best beer I've cooked it. It gave a lovely sweetness to my stew that I'd imagine would do the same for pork.

    I have heard cheap beer works best, but don't understand that.

    Cooking with 5am Saint could produce strange results.. Cant imagine what it would taste like in a beef and ale stew/pie etc.

    Thanks lads. Ended up getting a bottle of Clotworthy Dobbin in Dunnes. Well actually two bottles... one for the dish and one to tase! :)
