    All,
Hoping you can help. I have decided to buy an 06 BMW 3 series petrol. I don't do the mileage to need a diesel.

So trying to decide on 316 or 318.

I know the 318 has a greater bhp, but by how much and will I really notice the difference.

would the 316 be more fuel efficient and how mush of a saving would I make on road tax

is there any other factors I am leaving out of my decision

    thanks
    Reg

Only about 2.50 a week more to tax the 318

    hi QZ
drove a few 318's and one 316, the 316 had a lot of mileage up and was hard to tell if it was just had its work done

do you know the specs of these cars bhp etc

defo the 318 the slightly bigger engine will make very little difference on the mpg.

It will be much nicer to drive though.

    Avoid poverty spec.

Lots of 520's out there too.

there is a lot of es or poverty spec ones out there frank, would prefer the se with under 80k miles

The the 318 is a little lame. A 320i isnt any more to tax a has more adequate go. The 316 is a joke.

so 31i8 and 320i are 2 litres, whats the difference

Bmw 316 is 120bhp with the 318 showing 127bhp on parkers. I would also agree with frank on the poverty spec bit. They are lovely yolks to drive.

Harder to find than you think. even in 08 they were still selling the 148bhp version.

    07 320i will be considerable dearer, would pick up an 06 318 for about 6,500 - 7,000

difference in tax per year is E196, difference in fuel would be negligible. You will have far more 318's or 320's to choose from. What is your budget op?

the below dont look like bad buys. OP DONT buy any car even if its from a dealer without getting it checked by a ideally a bmw specialist first! believe me, if you buy a lemon, one or two euro a week difference between running a 316 or a 318/320 will be peanuts!

    budget 6,500 to 7

I hate when people break down tax to a weekly spend. I would go for the 318 op. You won't really nice the bhp, but you'll find it easier to search if you stick to one model and there are more 318s to choose from. I had the iSE version and it was a sweet ride. was a 2001 car. Loved it.

    Thanks all for the replies,
Thinking if no real difference in bhp between the 318 and the 316 then why not go for the 316 if a suitable one comes up. There is nearly a 200 euro saving on the tax.

On my budget, yes I intend to buy private I always do and think its ok once the car is looked over by a good mechanic you can trust.

Also like the idea of the 320i now as well.
