Edge 500: cadence sensor issues

I've been having some issues with my cadence sensor of late and wonder can anyone offer any advice aside from the return to Garmin option.

It only work intermittently so decided to change the battery, seemed to fix it for a week or two but then it got a whack or two when a spoke failed.

Now it only sometimes comes on and fails randomly too, I've reset it a number of times and it works for a while once done but eventually gets dropped again. The edge is always detecting it though, just seems like it doesn't always transmit. I stopped using the spoke magnet as it was constantly ****ing up an setting off the autopause.

Sensor was bought in UK but I'm now in NZ and it's out of warranty too so returning it will invariably be messy and prob not worth it with the usual rip off NZ prices.

I had problems with mine and Garmin support were really helpful. I'd ring them and talk to them (they might not need it returning).

yes, i had very similar problems, and when i had my race wheels on without the spoke magnet things got a huge amount worse, it would auto-pause constantly. in the end i just took off the cadence sensor as i dont use this info.

a little while later i noticed i wasnt logging the same segments on strava as the other guys on the ride, when analysing the route on the map, the return leg was following the same profile as the road but a few hundred meters into the forest. after that i sent it back to garmin, that was a few weeks ago, still waiting for a reply. not related to the OPs issue but thought i would throw that in.

not altogether happy with the garmin unit, too many different problems for a 6 month old product.

    Hi Cookie Monster
Has anything else changed on the bike or with your pattern of usage that coincides with the problems?

The radio frequency link between the Cadence sensor and you're Edge 500 is, like all RF links, susceptible to local interference if its powerful enough.

Have you fitted any new lights to the bike, sometimes the dimming or flashing features can cause this interference. Do you take your mobile phone out with you on rides? You could try to leave it behind for a test ride and see if the problem persists.

I had the same problem recently. Loads of autopauses and missed parts of the route.

I replaced the battery - no joy and I managed to cut the o-ring for good measure.

I replaced the battery with a second new battery , reset the cadence sensor and then re-paired the garmin and the cadence sensor - aok. I'm not really sure which of these three actions sorted things out to be honest.

For what it's worth I think that after a battery replacement and reset you should see the LED flash as the crank magnet passes the sensor - I don't think I got that the first time so either replacement battery was a dud or I needed to reset/re-pair.
