07 320D Turbo blown (Advice needed)

As per title, turbo on my 320d blew on the way to work yesterday.

Garage have said that they can fit a new one but it looks like the dpf had caused the turbo to blow because there were signs of excess heat on one side of the turbo.

    Does this make sense?

They suggest either cleaning down the dpf and hoping for the best, or getting a specialist to remove dpf altogether and re-map the engine. Obviously cleaning it is cheaper and removing it is quite expensive, particularly on top of a new turbo.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks.

how much are they looking for, for a new turbo?

    Nearly a grand including labour.

I would have thought removing and mapping out wouldnt be much dearer than cleaning.

Personal preference, remove it. Your driving is causing it to block so it will block again.

Better power and mpg without it.

Also check the egr operation. That could have caused the problem

Cleaning it would be just the cost of the chemicals and mybe an hour's labour apparently.

removal and re-map is 750 euro.

But one is a temporary repair and the other is permanent so it really depends on your future plans for the car.

A blocked DPF can certainly cause premature turbo failure due to excess back pressure on the turbine.

Yea, I'm leaning towards the removal alright, despite the expense. What are the future prospects of the car with new turbo, no dpf?

Also, something I was wondering about, I had no real warning of this at all. No dash warning lights, no odd sounds, no lack of power etc.

Occassionally however the car would feel like it was hesitating ever so slightly, kind of like the back wheels weren't engaging for a split second and then rolling as normal if that makes sense?

Removal and remap should be no more than 300.

    Go somewhere else

    Where are ya?

750 is mental money for a dpf removal. Even if the new pipe is 100 euro thats still 650 left to reprogram it

Car is currently in Dun Laoghaire.

id get quote from Gary doyle in chelmsford motors, scullys in clontarf, and valdelis (see below link) bloomfield motors, all except scullys are bmw specialists...

There is a crankcase breather filter that should be changed every second oil change, if it hadnt been done could have been a factor.

Secondly, for the DPF to start a regen the coolant temperature needs to be 75 degrees or higher, if its not the DPF may have blocked first then blown the turbo. When your back in action check the coolant temperature after driving for 20 mins via the hidden menu on the obc, if its not 88-91 get the main and egr stat replaced.

    Update:

Turbo has been replaced and car was sent to specialist to deal with dpf issue.

Turns out that the car doesn't actually have a dpf and maybe first mechanic mistook dpf for catalytic converter.

Being told now that cat needs to be replaced as it and the exhaust are full of oil.

Where do I take it from here?

    Thanks.

Maybe the DPF cleaner guy can clean your CAT? It's prob covered in oil 'cos of the turbo fault, it might clean up AOK.

As far as possible away from the first mechanic.

    Yea gathered that alright.

Not all that satisfied now that I'm actually going to find out what caused the blown turbo.

Ok Cat has been replaced, and also waiting on gasket between turbo and cat (seals burst after turbo blew apparently)to be changed.

Mechanic said that there are a few errors on the diagnostic, including MAF, but that he'll know more when new gasket goes in.

If a new MAF is also needed, what kind of money are we talking?

Really, that doesn't sound too bad.

Anyone know what type of record 320d's with new turbos have reliability wise? (Bearing in mind catalytic converter is now new aswell and there is no dpf.)

Really can't afford for this to happen again.

If it's done properly and the parts are good it should be very relaible.

Kind of curious, if there is no dpf, what would have caused the turbo failure?
(Regular oil changes and breather filter changed)

Wear and tear? Do they have a limited lifespan anyway? 80K miles on the car.

Who the hell is the mechanic? Dublin based?

I'd have thought so. Bearings etc.

    was the egr checked?

Turbo was replaced by Dublin based garage, they then misdiagnosed dpf as reason for turbo failure and suggested using specialist to remove.

Car is now at specialist, no dpf present, cat replaced and waiting on delivery of new gasket.
