Can any one recommend a bike rack for a Citroen C4 and/or Fiat Panda?

I have this one (I think! got it on CTW and sale so didn't cost anything like that much) and find it good - meant to fit pretty much any car. Depends on how many bike you want to carry etc I guess! Looking for roof mount or boot or towbar?

Sorry to hijack, I'm actually in the market for a roof mounted bike rack at the moment.

Anyone have any experience with the Thule 561 or 591?

I'm leaning towards the 561 which locks in the bike by the fork without the wheel. The 591 clamps onto the frame.

I presume both will work with non-thule roof racks?

    I've a 591, it's great. But I'd imagine a 561 will bend your wheels....

I have the 591 too, and love it. Easy to use. Secure mount.

Don't understand this - the front wheel is removed from the bike!

Recently did all the research I could and settled on the 561! There seems to be some suggestion that the 591 is not a great idea for carbon frames given the stresses involved! Also the 561 is definitely more secure and looks much cooler!!! ;)

On the downside removing the front wheel could annoy some people but really just takes a few seconds!

From a Bike Radar test of the 591!

"Though Thule recommend the fork-mount OutRide 561 rack for carbon and other ‘sensitive’ frames, there’s not much the ProRide 591 won’t handle."

I have a Hollywood F1B and it does the trick, not too expensive either....

Eh, I use the Halfords mid range ones. Think I got two for 100e? I've used them for a year now, once or twice a week with BMXs, road bikes, MTB and the track bike, all around the city and a few trips to Donegal. They're 100% and a damn sight cheaper.

I bought a Saris Bones last year - an excellent rear-door mounted rack, absolutely secure with no movement whatsoever. It is available in 2 and 3 bike versions, there is also a Saris Solo which is quite similar in design to the Bones but does not have an anti-sway strap. I am not sure if the Bones fit the Citroen or Panda though - there is a facility on their website, saris.com, whereby one inserts car model and details and it advises which Saris model is suitable for the particular vehicle. Hope this helps.

Only needs to be for one bike.

Planning on cycling Dublin-Athlone to a family event but wont be able to cycle back

If you've a carbon frame, you should use the Thule 561 - carbon downtubes are not designed to be clamped.

I have the Saris Bones which I find great, and you don't have the worry of roof mounted bikes getting totalled by low carparks, toll barriers etc.

Not carbon so dont need to worry about that.

Have you tried taking both wheels, saddle and pedals off and sticking it in the boot. I've a Hollywood 4 bike rack, but only put it on if the whole families going to be cycling.

If it was just me heading down the bike would fit in the boot no bother.

But the whole family is going so there will be a buggy, cot and a load of other baby crap as well

Bear in mind the prevailing wind is westerly so Athlone-Dublin should be easier if you only want to do it one way. You could get the train?

A bike rack is handy to have though I generally don't need it. Bought a mondeo estate especially for the purpose of being able to lug two kids a bike and all their associated crap around. Normally can fit two road bikes in the boot with just the front wheels of, for summer holidays I got the bike in with the two wheels and seatpost off along with a phil & ted double buggy a travel cot and a couple of cases.

Micks Garage have a carriers broken down by car make/model.

I'll be in the same boat in the next week or two as my trusty Almeira with a towbar for mounting the rack needs replacing (or get a towbar fitted to the new car, but then I saw the price of towbars  )
