I was thinking of doing my first triathlon this year. Anyone know what thickness wetsuit is best? I'm new to it ...is there a minimum or maximum thickness allowed? Where is best place to buy a triathlon wetsuit? Thanks in advance.

There is a maximum but any tri specific suit will be legal.

On one suit the thickness will vary from 2mm to 10mm depending on where on teh body.

Best bet is to head to a tri store (Base2Race) and swim in one in their endless pool

Yeah Base2Race endless pool is a great thing to try out - I got my first wet suit there and they know there stuff. Just make sure you cut your finger nails! ;) You'll understand why and be told when you try put them on. They are a bit pricey but the service they provide is excellent - I went for the TYR Hurricane C3 for €360, they do a cheaper one the C5 Id' imagine it's about €2XX. It's a 3mm arms and legs thickness and I thing 5mm torso thickness.

In fairness to the guys the suits may be expensive but you are getting what you pay for.

You can price check them against any other wetsuit provider and you will see that there is no charge for the advice, selection, fitting or testing in the pool.

It is not built into the cost of the suits or anything like that, they just take pride in the knowledge that customers are properly looked after and that their recommendation is in the best interests of you.

In answer to the OP triathlon wetsuits are not measured in the same way that diving of sailing westuits are rated 3 / 4 / 5 etc. The differences in tri wetsuits comes down to varying thicknesses overall that influence the flexibility in the shoulders (particular importance) fit through the body (should be tight with no air pockets) and buoyancy.

More expensive suits will have variances on these factors, and have additional features like alignment panels, forearm friction, higher grade coatings for 'glidyness' in the water, high grades neoprene for extra flex and stretch.

Definitely for your first triathlon wetsuit, go and get fitted by someone who knows what they are talking about.
