I have a vintage Speedmaster and need to get the back off to check the movement and serial numbers. Can anyone recommend a reputable place that can do this for me while I wait (Dublin/Wicklow), I need to photograph the inside and don't want the watch out of my sight!

If you are inclined to do it yourself then there are two possibilities.

    1) If the back is a pop off back then get a very fine screwdriver and gently use it to prise the back off with the screwdriver head between the case and case back. But they key here is to do this just between the lugs so if you make a scrape it is less obvious.
    2) If the back is a screw off type then it is likely you do not have a tool. So get some gaffer tape (duck tape) and remove a piece about a foot long. Roll this piece in to a ball with the sticky side out. Then place this firmly on the caseback and twist. Back should screw off.

Take your pics and then put the case back on. Do this in a clean environment - less dust in the air the better! If you have used the gaffer take method you will need to clean residual sticky stuff from the back of the case.

However, if you are not comfortable with this then head down to your local sole trader jeweler. He will happily remove the back, let you take some snaps and then put it back on for you. He may charge you a nominal fee of about a fiver (at least that is what I was charged when i did this once upon a time).

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the Duct tape, if it works I'll be happily amazed! Failing that I'll find a local jeweler who knows what they are at.

    Cheers.

It's pretty exciting, it looks like pre Moonwatch, not sure Adverts is worthy of such a piece!
