Looking at getting one of these. Just wondering though, do they come with maps already installed on them?
Eg, if I went out on a cycle and was unsure half way into a cycle which way to go, can you type in where you want to go? Or do you have to preload your maps and stick to that route?
    Thanks

When i was buying the 705 u had the option to buy with or without maps. I assume the 800 is the same.

There's a review which talks about the maps, including how to load custom maps, here.

I don't have personal experience of these (and I'd love if someone who did could correct me if I'm wrong) but here's my guess for what each product does.

Base maps which come with every unit. Major roads only.

City Navigator which comes in the Nav bundle. More roads including a lot more detail for cities across Europe.

Discoverer Eire which you have to buy separately. OSI maps showing every laneway in the country and also quite a few forest trails and the like. Will also show contour lines, landmarks etc.

BirdsEye Eire which you have to buy separately. Images like google maps satellite view. You can see whether this road is going through a forest, if there's a big building at the cross roads, whatever useful information you might get from satellite view you should get from this.

Can''t give a 100% definitive answer but I know that when I bought my edge 800 I had to pay an extra amount ( think it was around €20 ) for the maps - Western Europe.

With these maps it pretty much works as any sat nav would. Have used it in France as well as here in Ireland and it had all roads that we rode on.

I plumped for an edge 800 before christmas, wanted something with maps that would save me if I got lost on a bike trip.

You definitely have to install extra maps onto the device, whether you want to try the free downloads from the internet or buy a micro sim card from mysatnav.ie for €43 and get your maps this way (this is what I did because I didn't trust myself to be tech savvi enough to download files from internet onto the device).

Whilst you're cycling, the 800 will show you exactly where you are in the world (depending on which maps you have downloaded on your device).
I'll be honest and say it's not the easiest thing to use, the zooming in and out on the map on the tiny screen can be infuriating, it will zoom in/out too much and the screens can be slow.
But if you did get lost, you can add your home as a 'location' and get the edge 800 to show you a route home, so that's handy.

Ideally I would have liked the same detail as a car sat nav or google maps on the edge 800, and you dont get that, but I haven't had it that long and haven't completely put it to the test/ got to know its full capabilities - so maybe dont pay too much heed to my thoughts on it.

Comes with base map (useless) you also need city navigator (micro sd card) UK-Ireland or Europe . maps available for all regions. You can set your location eg home work whatever, then go into locations select which one and off you go you can also create a course for yourself or share.Frank kinlan's dummies guide to garmin 800 is a great source of information. ps battery lasts 8-10 hours .maps can also be downloaded from openstreetmap.org,details on "how to" google talky toaster.com
