Hi, Can anyone tell me if these boards are any good?
That is, with an eye on durability.
    I'm a total beginner[1 lessonlast year], mid 30's, 6 ft
    and 14ish stone.

    Appreciate any advice.

Whats the board you're looking at?

OK you are never going to be any good at surfing compared to a kid that grew up next to the sea surfing their whole life. So to maximise your fun and surfing I’d be going for an “average Joe longboard” that can take a knock. Something durable would be a Bic 9 ft or 9ft4 and if you keep an eye out second hand you’d get one for about 250 ish, for your weight you could also look at bic 7’9 or 8’4 magnum but I’d be going for a longboard.

Circle One do an nice 8’6 and some nice longboards. Thinks there is an 8ft custom board on adverts that is suitable for beginners as well but expect to be fixing the odd ding

Would you not try bodyboarding,I'm nearly 40 and tried both...
    The bodyboarding seems more fun.

Oops... forgot to post the link:rolleyes:.

    Here it is..http://www.sunset.ie/p/_vision_9ft_soft_surfboard_inc_fins_leash_

As for body boarding, it's good but not as exciting as the stand up

version. I don't have too much trouble getting standing on a 9' board

so I want to focus on that for a while.

I've done loads of kayaking [river playboating] over the years, and a

bit of wakeboarding but the idea of surfing has me hooked.

Appreciate the responses. My wife tells me we cant afford a board

and she's not all that wrong so my budget is €200 max [max max max]

Give Tom in Lahinch surf shop a call.
He is a good honest guy and wont put you wrong.
There's always 2nd hand boards in his shop...

    Good luck with the search...

Half decent second hand longboards seem to start at about 300 unfortunately. That board will be fine for the first year or so. Depends how often your out and how quickly you progress. Once your on your feet and able to surf along a wave left or right it'll be time to move on. The wife's comment will be in one ear and out the other by then;).

John in Sunset is sound enough to deal with.
Also you could give Tom in Perfect Day Surfschool a call as he sometimes has 2nd boards.

The one you threw up would probably be fine, can be sold on or kept as a spare for friends etc when you do move on.
Don't worry about it being a soft-top, the important thing is getting to spend time in the water.

I think you'll regret buying it, you'll outgrown it very quickly and will want to get a better longboard, it's only 200 euros so you'll find it hard to sell second hand for more than 100, why spend 150 for second hand when you can get new for 200. Keep an eye on donedeal, adverts.ie an local adds for a good second hand board there are loads out there - this one is not a 6'6 it's a 7'9 asking 220 so could get it for 180

Pulled the trigger today as I had the chance to nip

up to Sligo. Happy with it so far. Looking forward to

getting it wet! As for the economics of it all, I recon

if I do outgrow it, I should be able to sell it after a couple

of years for about €100. I paid €180 so that wouldn't be

    bad.

Thanks to all the responses. See ye on the water!

Don't worry, I've read about newbie wave etiquette!
